Kelly Palace, representing UC14 Masters Swimming, clocked the fastest-ever 1500 freestyle in Masters Swimming history in the Women’s 65-69 age group at the Masters Southeast Zone LCM Championships in Cary, North Carolina, last week. Palace blasted a major best time of 20:19.05, which tops the former World Aquatics Masters World record time of 20:41.53 by Suzanne Heim-Bowen back in July of 2023. This record marks the 2nd World Aquatics Masters World Record in the 65-69 age group, as she is the current holder of the 400 freestyle World Aquatics Masters World Record, set in June at 5:09.26. Palace opened up strong, touching in 6:44.05 through her first 500 meters. She then settled into a 1:21-mid pace for the next four 1oos, before hitting the 1000 mark in 13:33.09. From the 1100 through the 1400, those four 100s were nearly identical, splitting 1:22.00, 122.02, 1:22.02, and 1:22.00, before unloading a blistering 1:17.92 on the final 100 meters, the fastest 100 of her entire race. Her first 750 was only 2.59 seconds faster than she was coming home on the back half: 10:08.23 to 10:10.82.
