With West Ham United facing life in the Championship in 2026/27, one area of the EFL regulations could give the club a useful short-term advantage as they look to rebuild the squad and push for an immediate return to the Premier League. There is no overall limit on the number of loan players a Championship club can sign, although there is a maximum of five loan players who can be named on the team sheet for any individual league match. There is, however, an important restriction. West Ham could sign a maximum of four players on loan from any one club during the season, with no more than two of those players aged over 23. They could potentially have a sizeable number of loan players within the squad, while still being restricted to five in any individual matchday squad. With the Championship’s new Squad Cost Rules coming into effect for 2026/27, controlling expenditure will also be particularly important. For West Ham, therefore, the loan market could be one of the most effective tools available this season. If the club can identify Premier League quality players who can make an immediate impact, loans could allow them to strengthen several positions without committing huge amounts of money to permanent transfers. The objective should be simple: use the Championship’s loan rules to build a squad capable of winning the league, secure promotion at the first attempt, and then reassess the squad once back in the Premier League.
