Danny Banda, a member of the Saskatchewan Roughriders from 1958 to 1962, is part of the Regina Sports Hall of Fame’s Class of 2026.
The Regina-born Banda was a defensive back, linebacker and return specialist with the Green and White.
Now 88, Banda enters the Regina sports shrine as a multi-sport athlete. He was also accomplished in hockey and baseball.
The 5-foot-9, 155-pounder excelled on special teams at a time when the CFL prohibited blocking on punt returns. He fielded 37 punts in 1959 and 60 the following year.
Banda added seven career interceptions, including three in 1958 and 1959. Previously, he had played football at Balfour and with the junior Regina Rams.
Also being inducted as athletes are Janz Stein (athletics) and Lois Kos (lawn bowling).
Three builders have been selected. The Isaac brothers, Mal and Dale, are being honoured for their excellence in the media. Rod Schmidt is being recognized for his contributions to multiple sports and projects.
Schmidt, for example, was the City of Regina’s Manager of Stadium Development from 2011 to 2019. That period included approval of new Mosaic Stadium (in 2012) and the facility’s official opening (2017).
Mal and Dale Isaac were previously inducted together in 2003, when they joined the Canadian Football Hall of Fame’s media wing.
Mal Isaac, who is being inducted posthumously, was a key member of the media committee when the 1995 Grey Cup was held in Regina. During his media career, he covered the Roughriders extensively for the Regina Leader-Post and the CBC.
Dale Isaac, a sports broadcaster in Saskatchewan for 33 years, was a member of the CTV network’s CFL telecast team from 1980 to 1986. As well, he was on the Roughriders’ radio broadcast team for five years in the 1970s.
The aforementioned inductees will be joined in the Hall this year by the 2006 Regina Squids (water polo). The Squids are being recognized in the team category.
The formal induction ceremony is set for Oct. 8 at the Queensbury Centre.
