Champions Chess Tour 2026-2027: Adjusted Format, Same Road To The Esports World Cup
As GM Magnus Carlsen celebrates another Esports World Cup title, attention is already turning to the road to next year's event. The Champions Chess Tour (CCT) 2026-2027 cycle remains the main road to the next Esports World Cup—with a tweaked format designed to simplify the tour and sharpen its competitiveness.
Running from September 1, 2026, to May 25, 2027, the CCT will comprise three of Chess.com's biggest events: Titled Tuesday, Speed Chess Championship, and Chess.com Open. With 12 Esports World Cup spots at stake, every week counts.
No Direct Qualification Spots
Players no longer earn a direct qualification spot by placing among the top three in the Speed Chess Championship or the Chess.com Open. Instead, qualification comes solely from the CCT Leaderboard, with the top 12 players making it to the Esports World Cup.
Placing at the top of these major events, however, remains critical. A win can earn players as many as 150 points, a considerable advantage in the race for a qualification spot.
Titled Tuesday Stakes Are Higher Than Ever
Finishing among the top 10 in Titled Tuesday now earns players points that feed directly into the CCT Leaderboard. Points also accumulate throughout the year, rewarding players who perform consistently at a high level. The change replaces the Titled Tuesday Grand Prix format, which reset standings and capped each player's points within individual Splits.
Along with the recently increased prize fund, these changes make Titled Tuesday more important than ever. With 39 weeks in the 2026-2027 cycle, players can earn hundreds of points in Titled Tuesday alone.

Chess made its Esports World Cup debut in 2025, introducing competitive chess to a global esports audience for the first time, with Carlsen winning the inaugural title in Riyadh. The event returned for a second edition in 2026, building on that momentum with an expanded format and a growing spotlight within the wider esports calendar, as Carlsen successfully defended his title to become a back-to-back Chess at EWC champion. The Champions Chess Tour has anchored that path in both years, turning a full season of results into the sport's definitive qualification pathway to the esports world stage.
As the 2026-2027 season gets underway, more details on each of the tour's events are coming soon.
