Celtic are reportedly considering a move for Southampton goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu, according to the Daily Echo.
The Ireland goalkeeper spent the last six months of last season on loan at Stoke City, making six appearances in the Championship with two clean sheets.
Bazunu also spent the season prior at Standard Liège on loan, with just six appearances in under half a year in Belgium.
The goalkeeper is also an Ireland international, making his debut in 2021. He has 22 caps, with his last appearance coming in 2024.
Bazunu was not in the matchday squad for Southampton’s recent fixtures in the EFL Cup against Colchester and against Watford in the Championship on Sunday.
Dinamo Zagreb are also said to be interested. Bazunu is reportedly destined for a move this summer. However, an asking price has not been reported. He joined the English Championship side for £12 million in 2022 and, given his lack of consistent starts for Tonda Eckert’s side, a fee would have to be lower than that for Celtic to bid.
A loan move would also not be off the cards, but given the fact he has already had two loans in the last two seasons and his deal expires next summer, the Saints will look to recoup some of their investment from 2022. That means a move to Celtic does make sense in many ways to provide competition for Viljami Sinisalo.
It would be a transfer that would likely signal Bazunu is not a guaranteed starter and instead would provide more competition for Sinisalo, which CeltsAreHere understands Celtic want, with Sinisalo viewed positively behind the scenes at the Hoops.
Celtic have also been linked with Blackburn goalkeeper Balázs Tóth in recent days. However, we understand no bid has yet been made despite personal terms being agreed. Tony Mowbray’s side are said to value the Hungary international at £4 million, with Celtic said to be willing to pay closer to £2 million.
