The third episode of this season’s Hard Knocks put a camera on a sideline conversation at Seattle Seahawks practice between general manager John Schneider and special teams coordinator Jay Harbaugh. The subject was the free agent cornerback Seattle agreed to terms with last week and still has not added to its roster. Harbaugh opened by asking why the Detroit Lions would have released Terrion Arnold at all. “Well, it was because it was very shocking,” Schneider replied in the episode, which aired Tuesday night. “Like, if you read The Athletic article, it’s not good, you know?” Harbaugh then asked what Seattle would have done in Detroit’s position. “I think we probably would have had to let him go,” Schneider said. Harbaugh continued by separating the two roles a team can play in a case like this one. “Because it’s just the nature of like, when you’re the team, it’s different than the second-chance team,” he said. “It’s totally different.” Schneider told him he understood. Arnold faces four counts of kidnapping and four counts of armed robbery in Florida, charges that carry a potential sentence of life in prison. Prosecutors accuse him of directing the kidnapping and beating of three men he suspected of stealing cash and goods from him. He has pleaded not guilty and has denied the allegations through his representatives. He was released on a $1 million bond a day before Detroit cut him, and no trial date has been set. Seattle’s public case for adding Arnold has rested on being his second-chance team. Schneider’s answer places the facts of the case in the same category that, by his own account, would have cost Arnold his job in Seattle had he already been on the roster. The contract remains unsigned. Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo reported on Tuesday that the NFL will place Arnold on the commissioner’s exempt list as soon as he signs, barring him from practicing or playing while the league conducts its own review. He would still be paid, and that money would still count against Seattle’s salary cap. The timing question sits with the people about to own the team. Neeru and Vinod Khosla are expected to be approved as the Seahawks’ new owners next week, and the roster they inherit would include a player they are required to pay and not permitted to use. Macdonald said on Monday that he had no update on when Arnold might report. Arnold’s next scheduled court date in Tampa is Oct. 5.
