Wycombe Wanderers have launched an effort to sign Exeter City star Jayden Wareham. The Grecians forward was a standout last season despite their relegation, with his 19 League One goals placing him joint second with Kyle Wootton in the Golden Boot race, only beaten by Leyton Orient‘s Dominic Ballard. Chairboys Pursue Move Wareham has been long linked with a move away from St James Park following the confirmation that they had been relegated to League Two, with reports at the start of July suggesting that Bristol City were keen on a move. Ultimately, the Robins opted to sign Ballard as well as Plymouth Argyle‘s Lorent Tolaj for a combined £9 million, leaving Wareham to start the season at Exeter, playing in two of their three matches so far under Matt Taylor. But according to Pete O’Rourke of Football Insider, Wareham may be on his way out of Devon, with Wycombe Wanderers launching an opening bid for the 23-year-old forward. Michael Duff’s side are looking to rebound into the promotion conversation in League One, and have already recruited a new forward in the form of Stoke City loanee Emre Tezgel, joining Fred Onyedinma after the latter signed a new deal to remain at Adams Park. Wareham joined Exeter on a free transfer from Reading last summer, and hit the ground running with 22 goals and two assists across 55 appearances for the club. Taylor has already signed a new forward to try and help City adapt to life back in the fourth division, in the form of Josh Gordon, who has played in a rotational role so far this campaign. Wanderers Must Press On Following Exeter’s relegation and subsequent financial worries about the drop in division, many clubs were on red alert over moves for Jayden Wareham this summer. However, despite fleeting interest from Bristol City, nothing has truly emerged until now, with the news that Wycombe Wanderers have lodged a bid to try and pry the 23-year-old away from Devon. His electric form for the Grecians kept them alive in the relegation fight for much of the season, and at a well-stocked side like the Chairboys, could certainly be the difference-maker in helping them return to challenging for promotion. With Cauley Woodrow and Emre Tezgel not really prolific strikers, Michael Duff needs to find a consistent option to lead his line and in Wareham, they have found the ideal candidate if they can match Exeter’s demands. But time may be of the essence for Wycombe, as it would be fairly realistic to expect a few more sides to enter the race for the striker, meaning they must press on with negotiations quickly or face being drawn into a bidding war which could price them out of a deal.
