Tour of Britain Women: Lorena Wiebes snatches sprint victory on stage 1 ahead of Chiara Consonni
Josie Nelson goes third in bunch sprint into Cockermouth
Lorena Wiebes (SD Worx-Protime) won stage 1 of the Tour of Britain Women through Cumbria, beating Chiara Consonni (Canyon-SRAM) and Josie Nelson (Picnic-PostNL) in a bunch sprint in Cockermouth. With the stage victory, Wiebes also takes the overall lead.
Early attacker Leila Gschwentner (Smurfit Westrock) had been reeled in 25km into the 158.9km stage. On the stretch along the coast of Solway Firth, there were no new attacks, and only when the race turned inland did Arabella Blackburn (Handsling Alba) and Audrey De Keersmaeker (Picnic-PostNL) get away.
Handicapped by a bee sting, Blackburn had to let go of De Keersmaeker on the Caldbeck climb, and the Belgian solo rider was caught on the last classified climb of the day with 36km to go.
A slightly reduced peloton passed through the finish line in Cockermouth with 27.7km to go to tackle a rolling finishing circuit. There were lots of attacks, but SD Worx-Protime controlled every move and ensured a sprint where Wiebes was unbeatable.
How it unfolded
Starting and finishing in Cockermouth, the opening stage of the Tour of Britain Women would take the peloton on a big clockwise loop of northwest Cumbria followed by a smaller finishing circuit.
Gschwentner attacked soon after the flag was dropped following an 8.4km neutral zone. The Austrian got nobody for company but continued on her own, building a gap of just under a minute on the rolling roads towards Whitehaven.
In the coastal town, Gschwentner was reeled in as the favourites’ teams readied themselves for possible echelons in the onshore tail-crosswinds from Solway Firth. But whether it was because everybody was prepared or because the wind wasn’t strong enough, there was no echelon action on the coastal stretch to Silloth.
The intermediate sprint in Allonby was won by Karlijn Swinkels (UAE Team L’IMAD) ahead of her teammate Lara Gillespie and Kim Le Court-Pienaar (AG Insurance-Soudal), giving Swinkels and Le Court-Pienaar valuable bonus seconds for their GC bids.

A crash then took down Lieke Nooijen (Visma-Lease a Bike), Becky Gardiner (Great Britain), and Claire Steels (Movistar). Nooijen and Gardiner had to abandon the race because of their injuries, as did Jessica Roberts (Great Britain) after an earlier crash. Several other riders also had to abandon.
Blackburn and De Keersmaeker had each attacked on their own and joined forces just before Wigton, passing through the town 1:10 minutes ahead of the peloton. Starting the Caldbeck climb, they were 1:30 minutes ahead, but on the climb, Blackburn, who had been stung by a bee earlier on the day, could not follow De Keersmaeker anymore, leaving a solo rider in front.
De Keersmaeker was 2:45 minutes up at the QOM point with 66.3km to go, but the peloton soon stepped up the chase, caught Blackburn, and was only 40 seconds behind entering the last 50km. Not wanting to make the catch too soon, the bunch temporarily let the gap go up to 1:10 minutes again but had De Keersmaeker in sight on the second classified climb, Parsonby Brow, that crested with 36km to go.
Halfway up the climb, Le Court-Pienaar attacked with Liane Lippert (Movistar) on her wheel, catching De Keersmaeker, but when the two attackers were caught and another attack by Pfeiffer Georgi (Picnic PostNL) was neutralised, the pace fell again. De Keersmaeker managed to recover and attack herself for the mountain points, and although she was passed by Steffi Häberlin (SD Worx-Protime) and Lauren Dickson (FDJ United-Suez) just before the top, the Belgian crossed the QOM in third place to take the lead in the mountain classification. She will wear the blue QOM jersey on stage 2 and was also awarded the combativity prize for her efforts.
Just over 20 riders had made it over the climb in the first group, but more came back from behind on the descent to Cockermouth, and over 60 riders started the 27.7km finishing circuit together. In the intermediate sprint at the passage of the finish line, Mischa Bredewold (SD Worx-Protime), Swinkels, and Le Court-Pienaar took the bonus seconds.
On the rolling finishing circuit, there were almost-continuous attacks on the narrow, often one-lane roads. Georgi was first with Riejanne Markus (Lidl-Trek) and Aude Biannic (Movistar) on her wheel, then Biannic countered and was closed down by Georgi.
Le Court-Pienaar also joined in but was followed by Häberlin. With other riders jumping across, there was briefly a front group of 12 while the peloton split into several groups. Zoe Backstedt (Canyon-SRAM) and Gillespie were among the riders who couldn’t follow the pace.
Femke de Vries (Visma-Lease a Bike) went just inside the 20km mark but was quickly closed down. Lauren Dickson (FDJ United-Suez) attacked next but was neutralised by Ricarda Bauernfeind (Lidl-Trek) right away. When the latter’s teammate Margot Vanpachtenbeke attacked, she had Le Court-Pienaar and others on her wheel, and the move only served to string out the group.
Back on a two-lane road, Georgi went again 16.5km from the finish and briefly got a gap before Dickson took up the chase and reeled her in, setting up an attack by Kate Courtney (FDJ United-Suez), who was shut down by Häberlin and De Vries.
Now inside 15km to go, Quinty Ton (Liv AlUla Jayco) tried to get away but soon had Bauernfeind on her wheel, and the next move by Vanpachtenbeke was closed down by Lotte Kopecky (SD Worx-Protime). Shirin van Anrooij (Lidl-Trek) attacked but was chased down by Häberlin, then Markus tried again. Biannic bridged to her with Häberlin and Bredewold following soon after, but the quartet was caught with 12km to go.
Lippert then went away on a short uphill, and Le Court-Pienaar quickly bridged to her, but when two small groups jumped across to make it a group of nine, the cooperation stopped, and they were all caught just before the 10km mark.
Vanpachtenbeke, Häberlin, and Barale made the next attack, but as the move grew to ten riders, the pace went out of the group again. A move by Caroline Andersson (Liv AlUla Jayco) was shut down by Bredewold and Swinkels, and then Julia Kopecký (SD Worx-Protime) took over at the front of the peloton with 8km to go to set the pace in preparation for a bunch sprint.
Nevertheless, Ton tried again but was neutralised by Häberlin. Vanpachtenbeke’s move was shadowed by Kopecky, and when De Vries and Flora Perkins (Fenix-Premier Tech) went, Bredewold was on their wheels.
An attack by Markus was neutralised by Bredewold and Eleonora Gasparrini (UAE Team L’IMAD), then Ton tried one last time but didn’t get away. Lotte Kopecky went to the front to keep the pace high into the final 2km, taking a long turn well into the final kilometre and only swinging off.
With Nelson on her wheel, Georgi took the fastest line over the bridge across the river Derwent, but Bredewold led out Wiebes on the finishing straight, and when the superstar sprinter accelerated with 200m to go, there could be no doubt about the outcome as Wiebes won by almost two bike lengths over Consonni and Nelson.
