Dan Campbell’s new caffeine habits can only mean good things for the Detroit Lions

There are three things that a casual NFL fan knows about Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell. One, he’s the only person in recorded history to make promises about his team biting kneecaps. Two, there’s nothing he loves more than going for it on fourth down when most coaches will punt. And finally, he’s a man who consumes an obscene amount of caffeine daily.
But it sounds like one of those things may have changed.
Campbell sat down with local reporter Brad Galli for an interview and was asked about his famous caffeine routine. That question revealed a new development.
Campbell has apparently cut his intake in half after Brett Fischer, the Lions’ director of player health and performance, encouraged him to get a medical check-in.
“Our guy Fish told me, take this blood test, they’ll check all your levels,” Campbell said. “A couple things came out of it, I changed a couple things, and yes, I did back down on caffeine. It’s not a gallon, it’s a half a gallon now a day. We’re good.”

Make no mistake. This is still an incredible amount of caffeine. The thought of putting that into my system every day is unsettling because anything over two cups tends to result in some jitters and the inability to focus. Campbell, though, is a real man and can clearly handle it.
Now, the analytical part of the brain knows that this new methodology should not impact what happens with the Lions this season at all. But the fan part of my being wants to believe that it’s the singular tweak that will allow the franchise to finally get over the hump and into the Super Bowl. It’s based on nothing but then again it’s always tough to identify the moment vibes shifted and a championship era was ushered in.
Anyone who expects this now slightly less amped-up Campbell to alter his fourth-down decisions is living in a fantasy world, though. Those are not fueled by any outside substance, they are part of his DNA.
