THE DAILY BLOVIATION As has been documented here before, I never played organized football. I loved football as a kid and played in pick-up games in my neighborhood, but I lacked anything resembling the size, speed, or coordination to play competitively. I was a band kid. I played drums. While the football players were out on the field practicing in one spot, I was with my friends in the marching band, hauling around huge drums. I did some bass drum, but was mostly behind the three big tri-toms, lumbering about trying to march with those under the Summer heat. It was fun enough; I had a lot of friends in band, and there were girls in the marching band, so I didn’t miss not playing football. What I know about practicing under the hot Summer sun comes from those sessions preparing for the football season, trying to play music in the heat. After I graduated college, I was mostly confined in air-conditioned offices, running around trying to sell people on the idea that they should trust me with their computer systems and give me money. So, I can only relate to the football players who were practicing out in the humid Berea air yesterday in the remotest way. But I get cranky enough when I’m out in the yard doing yard work and sweating to imagine what it must be like to be in day 15 or so of training camp, with other people hitting you, coaches yelling at you, and trying to stand out while opposing players try to prevent you from doing so. Fractured news and emotional outbursts logically follow. And we’re in that stage of training camp where we’re starting to see them more and more. Yesterday’s practice ended because our defense would not stop putting our offense on the ground. I am not mad at head coach Todd Monken for that. Tuesday was pads. Chris Easterling had the clock: about 11 minutes left in the last period, Monken pulled the team in and yelled about protecting teammates and practicing smart. Players caught it. So did Mike Rutenberg and the rest of the defensive staff. Good. Josh Alper at PFT, who wasn’t there but was reading reports from people who were, says Monken already got “emotionally hijacked” once this camp. He got loud again. Reporters heard the rebuke and cannot print the words. I am not going to mock or misquote him, but, yeah, you can imagine the “directness” of his tone. Benton Whitley came around the right side and ran into Shedeur Sanders’ arm. Easterling thought he tried to pull up. Near the quarterback is still a no-no. Sideline. Adin Huntington then blasted Quinshon Judkins on a run and put him on the ground. Sideline. Easterling called that the last straw. Scott Petrak had the next two plays: Jared Verse would not let go of Judkins and knocked the Guardian Cap askew. Mason Graham added a shove after the whistle. Winston Reid had already shoved Judkins after a run earlier in the day. That is when practice ended. They are in pads. They are supposed to thud. I want this defense nasty. I also want Judkins walking in September. Tuesday picked a fight between those two ideas, and the coach picked the one that keeps us in games. Judkins is not new to this lecture. He put Mike Hall Jr. on the ground Aug. 1. Monken called it a mistake. Judkins’ version: “You’ve got to protect the team, got to protect your teammates” and “we’re not against each other.” Hall returned Tuesday, sacked Dillon Gabriel, and stuffed Dylan Sampson. Fifteen practices and a preseason game in 21 days. Three full days off. I imagine everybody is sore. I imagine everybody is sick of each other. The Bills arrive Thursday for a joint practice that Easterling already warned is not anything-goes. The Saints and Cowboys turned theirs into multiple brawls. Hopefully, the Browns got it out of their system and can focus on clean football against Buffalo on Thursday. Maybe not. I am fine with Monken ending it. Isaiah McGuire walked off with the trainers. So did KT Leveston and Carsen Ryan. Tytus Howard and Elgton Jenkins never came out. Blake Whiteheart rolled an ankle. Tyson Campbell has been out of team drills more than a week. Austin Barber has been at guard with the 2s for two days and Monken liked what he saw. Joe Royer (fifth-round tight end) is still out on a personal matter. We cut a guard to add a receiver. A retired RAF pilot named Andy Green drove a hydrogen car called the JCB Hydromax across the Bonneville Salt Flats on Aug. 11 and averaged 406.320 mph. Two official runs: 400.623 and 412.135. Fastest hydrogen internal combustion car on record. Green broke the sound barrier on land in 1997, so this is his idea of a Tuesday. The engines are construction motors that usually make 74 horsepower. They bolted two of them into a race car to prove a point. Hydrogen tech is real, but the USA has never gotten close to committing to building infrastructure to support it.
