Tottenham are hoping to bolster their attack by landing the Liverpool forward this summer.
There is a slight cause for concern among Tottenham fans as the club remains inactive during the business end of the transfer window. The Lilywhites showed great intent during the first half of the summer, signing six new players in quick succession. They brought in profiles capable of strengthening the defence and midfield, showcasing promising signs for the remainder of the window. However, it is fair to suggest that the North Londoners have almost sleepwalked through the second half of the summer.
Spurs’ first game of the new Premier League season is now only a few days away. And yet, the club has not managed to bolster its attack as Roberto de Zerbi aims to compete at the top end of the league table. As things stand, Mathys Tel, Richarlison and Mikey Moore are the only fit attackers available to the Lilywhites for their opening-day clash against Brentford. This highlights how urgent it is for the North Londoners to bring in attacking reinforcements in the coming days.
The constant delays in negotiations and the inability to agree on a suitable transfer fee have put Spurs on the back foot during the second half of the transfer window. They have been eyeing moves for Manchester City’s Savinho and Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo for quite some time now. However, the Lilywhites have still not managed to find a way to land either of their primary targets, despite agreeing personal terms with both players.
Tottenham urged to land Cody Gakpo before deadline day
Tottenham’s profound interest in Liverpool star Cody Gakpo is now well known. The transfer saga has dragged on for quite some time, with both clubs still unable to find common ground. Recent reports have suggested that the Reds would only sanction a deal for the Dutchman if they find a suitable replacement before the September 1st deadline, with Liverpool fighting hard to sign PSG star Bradley Barcola this week.
Now, however, Dutch legend Ruud Gullit has claimed that Spurs have the key to unlocking Cody Gakpo’s potential if the 27-year-old does end up at N17. Speaking to NY Sports Day (via Football London), Gullit said,
“His main issue has been consistency of minutes – in one week, out the next. I still rate him highly. During their title-winning campaign, he was superb. Gakpo needs a manager who shows complete faith in him and grants him the freedom to make mistakes without an immediate benching. When he plays with confidence, he has proven how impactful he is for Liverpool.”
Ruud Gullit is suggesting that Cody Gakpo needs regular minutes to showcase his quality in the Premier League on a consistent basis. Signing for Spurs would give him the opportunity to settle in and become the face of the project under Roberto de Zerbi. The Dutchman would be an instant starter on the left flank, potentially displacing Mathys Tel from the starting XI. There would also be less uncertainty over his playing time if he is deployed in his preferred position.
There are no doubts about Cody Gakpo’s immense talent and potential. The prolific attacker played a crucial role in helping Liverpool win the Premier League in 2024/25, scoring 18 goals in all competitions that season. He simply needs a manager who trusts him and gives him the opportunity to take the field on a regular basis. After a solid World Cup campaign with the Netherlands, a lot is expected from Gakpo this season. As a result, Spurs fans will hope that the 27-year-old does end up at N17 and gets the opportunity to showcase his true potential without constant scrutiny.
