If West Ham want to get promoted back to the Championship at the first time of asking, they need to change their mentality. Nuno’s defensive focused tactics didn’t work last season, and we’ve already seen them not work this season as we threw away a two goal lead to Burnley. Too many times we’ve seen Nuno get us in the lead and then sit back and try to hold on to all three points. Nuno playing like this would make sense if we could actually defend. In ‘Mourinho’ the recent Netflix documentary about the career of Jose Mourinho, a serial winning defensive coach. We saw his Chelsea side to the same thing, but they could actually defend as a unit. They were brilliant at defending, in fact they enjoyed it more than attacking, that’s the complete opposite of this West Ham team. Even last season in the Premier League our strength was our attack, even more so this year. We have by far the best attack in the League, and certainly not the best defence. Axel Disasi coming in last season really helped us and covered up our defensive deficiencies when we parked the bus. However, now he’s gone a back line of Scarles, Kilman, Mavropanos and Walker-Peters is nowhere near good enough or confident enough to play with their backs to the walls. Max Kilman is a liability at the back. He lacks concentration, aerial ability, and pretty much everything you need as a central defender in the Championship. Mavropanos improved massively alongside Disasi last season, but there’s only so much anyone can do playing alongside someone like Kilman. This is why we simply just have to stop defending like that. Kilman’s maim strengths are in possession, he’s quality on the ball. And Dinos is at he’s best when being aggressive, neither of them can be at their best in this current system. It’s fine for the last ten minutes, when we’re a goal up because there isn’t much we can do about it. But the fact Nuno chose to go defensive for the whole second half, practically giving up on the attack is nothing short of pathetic now we’re in the Championship. We’re the clear favourites to win the title. Nuno needs to get this team playing like the favourites or he could be out of a job very soon.
