Manchester United are closing in on a deal to sign Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba for a total fee of around £65 million. Michael Carrick’s side have been desperate to rebuild their midfield and have already strengthened in that area with the signings of Youri Tielemans and Andrew Santos earlier in the summer window. And now according to David Ornstein, Manchester United have identified Baleba as the final piece of the midfield puzzle. Their £65 million offer, comprised of £60 million upfront and £5 million in bonuses, does not yet meet the Brighton asking price for the 22-year-old Cameroonian midfielder, but the talks are ongoing and are likely to reach an agreement soon. Earlier in the window it seemed that United were bringing in Ederson from Atalanta, but the club backed out after a medical check brought up problems with his knee. If Baleba joins, he will add to the existing midfield options of Tielemans, Santos, Kobbie Mainoo, Mason Mount and Bruno Fernandes. It would likely signal the completion of the midfield rebuild, with the new signings bringing a mix of energy, and technical ability to the table. The Brighton midfielder was linked with a move to Manchester United last summer, but the clubs were unable to agree on a fee for the Cameroonian. However, it now appears as though the Red Devils are set to get their man in this window.
