West Ham United have completed the signing of striker Joel Piroe from Leeds United. The 27-year-old moves from Yorkshire to east London on a season-long loan, with a mandatory purchase clause included. "With my experience, I think I can help the Club a lot to achieve what they want to achieve, and I think it’s a good opportunity for me to show what I’ve learnt and how I’ve grown as a football player over the years. “Nils [Koppen] and Nuno [Espírito Santo] have both been very clear about what the goals for the club are, both in the short term and in the long term. They talked to me about how they see the team being set up, and it felt like a good match for me. I’m just really looking forward to joining the group, and working with the other guys on the grass.” Koppen, who led West Ham's bid to sign Piroe admitted he was pleased to secure the services of a player who had great experience - and a fine goalscoring record - in the second tier. "He is hungry, ambitious and really wants to be here to embrace the challenge that we have in front of us," said Koppen. "Joel will add further quality and strength to our attacking options on the pitch, and is ready to begin making a positive impact straight away.” The Suriname international, who was born in Wijchen (Netherlands) began his career with PSV before enjoying a season-long loan with Sparta Rotterdam. In 2021, Piroe moved to the UK when joining Swansea City, for whom he scored an extremely 41 goals in 91 appearances. Two years later he was off to Leeds, where he continued his excellent goalscoring form with 32 more goals in 104 appearances. Piroe becomes West Ham's fifth permanent capture of the off-season following the arrival of veteran defender Joel Veltman (Brighton), winger Manor Solomon (Tottenham) and Belgium midfielder Arne Engels (Celtic).
