'Formally pursuing' - New twist as Sunderland and Hull City battling for signing

Sunderland and Hull City are ‘formally pursuing’ FC Lorient’s Nathaniel Adjei this summer.
That’s according to Footy Africa, who cover the latest on Sunderland and Hull City.
The Ghana international moved to Europe when Hammarby IF signed him in 2022. His development in Sweden caught Rangers attention, and he snubbed them to join the Ligue 1 side permanently in 2024.
Adjei struggled with ankle problems regularly in 2025, which impacted his game time. Last season, the centre-back made 15 league appearances, with only nine starts.
Sunderland and Hull City in mix
Nathaniel Adjei initially caught the attention of a few unnamed Spanish clubs. That’s no longer the case and there’s a ‘new twist’ as four clubs are now ‘formally pursuing’ him.
Those clubs are Sunderland, Hull City, RC Strasbourg and FC Copenhagen. The Tigers have already made initial contact, although the negotiations are still in the early stages.
The other three clubs haven’t made any approach and are keeping a close watch on Nathaniel Adjei’s situation. Régis Le Bris’ side and two others are weighing up their next move.

Footy Africa states the four suitors are expected to ‘intensify their interest’ in the coming weeks and are considering whether to submit offers.
Ligue 1 side want to keep Adjei
Despite the growing interest, FC Lorient don’t intend to part ways with the 23-year-old this summer. That’s mainly because of their new manager, Alexandre Dujeux.
The Ghanian has impressed Dujeux in pre-season, and the manager wants to rely upon on him next season.
However, Nathaniel Adjei’s agent is assessing Sunderland, Hull City and two other clubs’ interest. The player is open to a move as long as there’s a convincing project.
The interested parties would have to make a tempting offer to convince Lorient to change their stance.
