David Parkin, named Carlton’s Coach of its Team of the 20th century, and the man who coached Carlton to its last AFL Grand Final victory, has revealed that the newly-appointed Coach Josh Fraser recently sought his counsel. Parkin, who mentored the Carlton senior players to the back-to-back Grand Final triumphs of 1981 and ’82, and again in 1995, said that he and Fraser, who was yesterday named Carlton’s 37th senior coach since the formation of the VFL, had recently met over lunch at Fraser’s request, so that the latter could form a better understanding of the Carlton story down through the years. “When he (Fraser) took the job on, I can probably say this . . . that one of the first conversations he had was to ring me and come and take me to lunch,” Parkin told Gerard Whateley on SEN. “I spent three or four hours with him, and he was looking into the history and traditions and cultures of the club which he was trying to understand in taking the job on - and I thought: “Well there’s a bloke who’s doing his homework in the best possible way to get some understanding of what is a very complicated history and cultural place, second to none. “I’ve worked in four or five them and nothing quite matches what the Carlton Football Club is able to produce.”
