St Mary’s School Yala kept their hopes of winning the Federation of East Africa Schools Sports Association (FEASSA) rugby 15s title alive after stunning defending champions Kisii School 23-5 in Morogoro, Tanzania. The victory propelled Yala’s Mighty Colts into contention for a maiden FEASSA 15s crown, while ending Kisii’s hopes of retaining the title. Kisii had already suffered an early setback after losing 8-3 to compatriots Upper Hill School, leaving them needing a strong response against Yala. Instead, the defending champions were outplayed as Yala secured a convincing victory. The result sets up a potentially decisive clash between Yala and Upper Hill on Friday, with both Kenyan sides now emerging as favourites to lift the title. Yala will first face Uganda’s St Mary’s Kisubi on Wednesday, while Kisii will take on Tanzania’s Elerai Secondary School. Upper Hill, chasing a fourth successive victory, will meet Uganda champions Jinja Secondary School. Kinale Girls underlined Kenya’s dominance in rugby after winning gold in both the girls’ 7s and 15s competitions, while Cardinal Otunga High School Mosocho claimed the boys’ 7s title. Kenya also continued to dominate the volleyball competition, with national champions Kesogon Mixed Senior School and St Martha’s Mwitoti Girls securing semi-final places. Kesogon, the 2024 East Africa champions, swept Uganda’s Seroma Christian High School 3-0 (25-15, 25-12, 25-11) in their Pool A match at Morogoro Teachers College grounds. They had earlier beaten Tanzania’s Lumala Secondary and Mengele Secondary and will complete their preliminary campaign against Rwanda’s GS Indagaburezi today, seeking a perfect record. Mwitoti also secured their third win after dispatching hosts Mwanhuzi Secondary School 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 28-26). The Kenyan girls had earlier beaten compatriots Soweto Academy and Uganda’s Bukedea Comprehensive School. In the boys’ competition, ACK Chepsaita all but secured a semi-final place after beating Uganda’s St Jerome Secondary School, Ndama, 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-15). Chepsaita have bounced back strongly after losing their opening match, winning their next three encounters. Kenyan champions Chesamisi Boys can seal their place in the last four if they beat hosts Kajunjumele today. l Kenya suffered setbacks in football, with Nyakach Girls and St Mary’s Yala exiting the championship. Nyakach lost 1-0 to Rwanda’s PSB Huye to drop to third in Pool A on four points from four matches. Huye moved into second on six points with two matches remaining. Kenyan champions St Joseph’s Girls Kitale also saw their semi-final hopes slip away after drawing 0-0 with Uganda’s Boni Consili Vocational Secondary School in Pool B. St Joseph’s, who have completed their matches, sit second on four points after recording one win and three draws.
