After spending a few months with the New York Giants since signing a one-year contract, the team is moving in a different direction, which is skyrocketing the Juju Smith-Schuster free agency sweepstakes right before Week 1. Adam Schefter of ESPN first reported the Giants’ release; in a corresponding move, the team has plans to sign former Pittsburgh Steeler and teammate RB Najee Harris. The veteran pass-catcher was listed as the fourth receiver entering the season, but the team had too many wideouts in their corps.
After the Giants drafted Malachi Fields while having signed Darnell Mooney and Calvin Austin, Smith-Schuster’s release was imminent. Originally selected in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft, the former USC product spent his four seasons with the Steelers. However, Pittsburgh decided to let him walk in free agency in 2022; he was unable to establish himself as a long-term receiver. The Kansas City Chiefs rolled the dice on the struggling wideout with a one-year deal that offseason, and finished the 2022 campaign with 78 receptions for 933 receiving yards and three receiving touchdowns while winning his first ring.
It earned him a three-year deal with the New England Patriots, but ultimately didn’t last, leading him back to the Chiefs in 2024. He re-signed another one-year contract in 2025, but didn’t make much of an impact, finishing with 33 receptions for 345 yards and one touchdown.

NFL Career on Life Support?
Perhaps it won’t be the case for the receiver. After all, he’ll only be 30 in November, and there should be a long list of teams waiting for him. Although he won’t be the same pass-catcher he once was, he’s still a solid, versatile playmaker who can maybe move the chains.
