Credit to Nils Koppen who has had the challenging task of both rebuilding a squad for Nuno on a budget whilst simultaneously trying to find a home for West Ham’s unwanted ‘legacy stars’ – those players signed under a different management who are surplus to requirements in this post-relegation era. Neither task is yet fully accomplished but the ‘incoming’ wheels are turning and Koppen has achieved a significant ‘outgoing’ placement today with confirmation coming this afternoon courtesy of the whufc.com website in the briefest possible news announcement: “West Ham United can confirm that Niclas Füllkrug has joined German Bundesliga side Werder Bremen on loan for the 2026/27 season. The 33-year-old German international striker has made 29 appearances for the Hammers since signing from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2024, scoring three goals.” No option to buy, no details on how much the Hammers are having to contribute towards Fullkrug’s albeit reduced Championship – level salary, and no dramatic farewells by either club nor player. Thank heaven, for the last time, Fullkrug has been found a home at huge expense. His West Ham contract expires in June 2027 and the whole sorry episode will end with huge sighs of relief all round. Worst ever transfer? Probably.
