Australian lightweight Quillan Salkilld gets his first main event opportunity in the UFC this Saturday, headlining UFC Vegas 120 opponent Poland’s Mateusz Gamrot. Gamrot, a former KSW champ, is a known quantity at this point and has slowly worked his way to contendership. Salkilld in comparison has had a quick rise up the division, and remains undefeated in the promotion. He’s done so at a key time: Justin Gaethje holds the belt at 155lbs, but likely isn’t far from retirement. Dustin Poirier is retired, as is Khabib Nurmagomedov, and his heir of sorts, Islam Makhachev, vacated the lightweight title to move to welterweight last year. It’s an opportune time for both men to earn a key win, in other words. While Arman Tsarukyan fights Mauricio Ruffy next month, ostensibly for a title shot, anything could happen.
