Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy speaks on wife’s recovery: ‘She’s a saint’ KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Just more than three weeks ago, the wife of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy was shot and seriously injured in her own home. For the first time since the incident, Bieniemy spoke publicly about his wife Mia’s recovery. “She is on the road to recovery. Yes, she is doing great. It’s one of the main reasons why I’m back here because of her recovery,” Bieniemy told members of the media on Tuesday morning. “She’s truly a soldier. She’s a saint, and it’s been incredible to watch.” Bieniemy had stepped away from the Chiefs after the shooting to tend to his wife as she remained hospitalized. “It feels good to be back. First and foremost, obviously, it’s an opportunity to get back in with the guys, to watch them work,” he said. “That way, now, we can all grow and get to learning each other. Obviously, we got a lot of new faces, and we want to continue the developmental process. But it feels good to be back because, obviously, when you’ve been in this environment, it becomes your family. “This is your family away from your family. So it feels good to be in this environment.” The Chiefs offensive coordinator jokingly said it’s good Mia and others that he has returned to St. Joseph for training camp. “I know I was driving her and a bunch of my family members crazy in the house,” he said. “So, she was like, ‘you have my blessing to leave.’” Their son Elijah was arrested in the incident, accused of shooting his mother. He was set to undergo a mental health evaluation before the case proceeded. Bieniemy rejoined the Chiefs earlier this year to take over for Matt Nagy as their offensive coordinator, a position he previously held. During his three seasons away from Kansas City, Bieniemy spent time as the Washington Commanders offensive coordinator, UCLA Bruins offensive coordinator, and Chicago Bears running backs coach. The Bears, with whom he spent the 2025 season, averaged the third-most rushing yards per game in the NFL. Bieniemy had served as the team’s offensive coordinator from 2018-22 and was with the Chiefs from 2013-22, spending his first five seasons in Kansas City as the team’s running backs coach.
