Newcastle United are evaluating a prospective swoop for Manchester City midfielder Nico Gonzalez ahead of the September 1 transfer deadline, according to new reports.
Nico Gonzalez enjoyed an indifferent year in his first full season at the Etihad Stadium last term, providing strong cover for Rodri in the opening months of the campaign but rarely getting a look-in after the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner’s return from a groin problem.
The 24-year-old joined Manchester City from FC Porto in January 2025 to provide greater cover in central midfield amid Rodri’s injury troubles at the time, playing a crucial role in helping the Blues qualify for the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League campaign in a challenging season for Pep Guardiola and the entire club.
However, in the Catalan tactician's final term in east Manchester, Nico Gonzalez repaid his manager’s faith when called upon to fill in for Rodri. But as the Etihad Stadium club embarks on a new era under Enzo Maresca, Gonzalez’s future has come into question.
Newcastle in talks with Man City over Nico Gonzalez deal
According to a new report from The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Newcastle United are assessing a potential move for Nico Gonzalez in the final fortnight of the summer transfer window and are in talks with Manchester City over a potential deal.
Manchester City are believed to have been open to selling Gonzalez, who is under contract at the club until June 2029, as part of their ongoing rebuild - a revamp that has already seen Bernardo Silva leave for Real Madrid on a free transfer following the expiry of his contract.
Tijjani Reijnders will join Saudi Pro League side Al Qadsiah this week and Rodri has also been confirmed as Barcelona player on Tuesday evening, meaning if Manchester City go on to sell Nico Gonzalez, they will have nearly an entirely new-look midfield come the end of the transfer window.
What would a sale for Gonzalez mean for Man City’s midfield?
Manchester City are confident of completing the signing of Lille midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi this week, having agreed personal terms with the 18-year-old Morocco international off the back of his breakthrough FIFA World Cup campaign in North America.
Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez is also of interest to Enzo Maresca, who managed the 25-year-old at Stamford Bridge and is keen to bolster his midfield further with the acquisition of the Argentine - who is valued in west London at £120 million.
Elliot Anderson has already strengthened Manchester City’s midfield after joining from Nottingham Forest for £116 million. However, the manner in which the Blues were swept away by the reigning Premier League champions Arsenal in the Community Shield would have reminded sporting director Hugo Viana of the gulf between Maresca’s side and Mikel Arteta's Gunners.
It remains to be seen whether Manchester City are open to parting ways with Nico Gonzalez in the backdrop of Rodri’s exit and the imminent departure of Reijnders, with the Spaniard having already publicly declared his personal desire to remain at the Etihad Stadium into this season.
