Leeds United forward Joel Piroe looks as if he will leave the Whites this summer.
The 27-year-old was granted permission to undergo a medical at West Ham ahead of a potential move. Piroe’s move to East London would initially be a loan one.
However, West Ham reportedly have an obligation to buy, which sits at around £15million.
So with Piroe’s three-year stay at Elland Road on the brink of coming to an end, Adam Pope has recently made a controversial claim regarding the Surinamese international.
Adam Pope questions decision to let Joel Piroe leave
Speaking on the Don’t Go To Bed Just Yet Podcast, Pope had his concerns about letting Piroe leave without a replacement already being in the building at Elland Road.
“I still think Leeds need something up there (a new striker), don’t you?”
“In the absence of that, do you let him (Piroe) go? With Piroe, are we in a situation where Leeds can wait until someone is desperate for a goal scorer and you wait for the last moment?
“Or January, by some people, would absolutely be desperate for a striker. But you feel like the deal needs to be done now.”
If the reports are correct and Leeds will receive £15million for Piroe if West Ham go up, they need to be biting their hand off for that.
Personally, I thought United would be lucky to even get £10million for Piroe this summer, so the fact we could be about to get £15million for him next summer would be an incredible bit of business.
Leeds need to replicate Nico Elvedi deal up top
When it was apparent that Sebastiaan Bornauw was going to join Hamburg, in the immediate aftermath of this, it was also apparent that we had lined up a deal for Nico Elvedi to replace him.
Both of these defensive moves look to be on the verge of completion.
So when we do let Piroe go, the 49ers need to ensure another attainable striker is firmly on their radar to bring in.
Typically, I’d want to hold on to a player before we get a replacement in. However, with Piroe, the deal West Ham have offered is so good, I think we need to get that transfer sorted as soon as possible.
Since Carlos Espi moved to Real Madrid, there haven’t really been any concrete links between us and another striker. But with our Premier League opener on the horizon, we need this to change sooner rather than later.
