Michael Andretti won an incredibly dramatic CART IndyCar race at Road America 30 years ago today. Al Unser Jnr appeared on course to win the race until a huge engine failure put him out on the final lap (at 1:57’46 in the video above). Several other drivers were involved in major incidents on the high-speed circuit at Elkhart Lake. Greg Moore accused Andre Ribeiro of forcing him off the track at high speed on the approach to Canada corner (above). “The guy just must be an idiot to be doing that at 190 miles an hour,” fumed Moore after his car almost flipped when Ribeiro forced him wide. “It’s just something you don’t do.”“Andre, passed me pure and simple in the back straightaway,” Moore explained. “A couple of laps later he got real sideways coming out of the Carousel. I had a good run, I’m going down through the kink. I did the kink flat and I got completely beside him. “It’s sort of a nice, long, turning straightaway and instead of turning, he just put me straight in the fence at about 190 miles an hour.” “All weekend everyone’s been running side-by-side through there,” he added. “If you’re on a slow lap you let somebody by on that side because it’s the inside for Canada Corner. He just didn’t want to let me by obviously and he just put me straight into the fence.” Ribeiro continued and was later involved in another controversial incident (at 1:07’30) at the same corner which eliminated PacWest team mates Mark Blundell and Mauricio Gugelmin. Davy Jones also flipped his car shortly after Moore’s retirement in a crash which the television coverage appeared to miss. Jones wasn’t the only driver to flip his car that day. The Unser drama unfolded moments after Parker Johnstone rolled out of the race at turn one after being hit by Paul Tracy (1:56’56).
