Tottenham Hotspur have reshuffled their goalkeeping department this summer, with Guglielmo Vicario swapping north London for Italy after joining Juventus on loan. Spurs have accepted an offer from the Serie A club that includes a non-mandatory option to buy, paving the way for Antonin Kinsky to take over as Roberto De Zerbi’s first-choice goalkeeper.
Kinsky started all seven of De Zerbi’s games in charge at the end of 2025/26 and played a crucial role in Tottenham’s successful battle against relegation, producing a number of impressive performances along the way.
The Czech goalkeeper has now been rewarded with the full trust of his manager, with Vicario’s departure set to open the door for Kinsky to establish himself as Tottenham’s long-term number one.

How Spurs’ Goalkeeping Situation Evolved
Vicario joined Spurs from Empoli in 2023 and quickly established himself as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper, enjoying a positive debut season in the Premier League and helping Tottenham secure a fifth-place finish.
The Italian remained number one into 2024/25 but suffered an ankle injury during the 4-0 victory over Manchester City, ruling him out for several months. Fraser Forster deputised but struggled for form and consistency, prompting Spurs to sign Kinsky from Slavia Prague in January 2025.

The Czech international was thrown straight into the starting XI for his debut against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup just 24 hours after signing, keeping a clean sheet while impressing with his distribution and shot-stopping. Kinsky made eight appearances during the remainder of the 2024/25 campaign, initially providing cover for Vicario before deputising for the Italian as Spurs prepared for the Europa League final.
Kinsky’s Turbulent 2025/26
Kinsky remained Vicario’s understudy throughout Spurs’ ill-fated 2025/26 campaign, making just two Carabao Cup appearances before Igor Tudor handed him a Champions League start away to Atletico Madrid.
It proved to be a “horror night” to forget for the goalkeeper, who made two errors leading to goals inside the opening 17 minutes before being replaced by Vicario with Spurs already 3-0 down. However, Kinsky quickly put that performance behind him and earned De Zerbi’s trust when Vicario was sidelined with a hernia after the Italian’s arrival in March.

The 23-year-old responded with a series of outstanding displays and point-saving moments, including a 98th-minute save from Joao Gomes’ free-kick away to Wolves that helped Spurs secure their first Premier League victory of 2026.

He went one better against Leeds two weeks later, producing an outstanding reaction save to push Sean Longstaff’s effort onto the crossbar in stoppage time and preserve a point for his side. Kinsky’s heroics continued on the final day of the season, when he somehow kept out Tyrique George’s strike in the dying stages against Everton to preserve another clean sheet and help secure Premier League survival.
The Last Word – Kinsky Completes His Redemption
Kinsky’s performances were rewarded with a new contract this summer, completing a remarkable turnaround for a player whose future appeared uncertain following his difficult night in Madrid.
He is now set to take over as Tottenham’s first-choice goalkeeper, with new signing Martin Dubravka providing experienced competition and Brandon Austin remaining as the third-choice option.
Vicario’s move to Juventus includes a non-mandatory £8.6 million option to buy, bringing an end to his three-year spell in north London should the Italian club eventually decide to make the deal permanent. For Kinsky, the move is an opportunity to turn an unexpected run of first-team football into a permanent place at the heart of De Zerbi’s side.

Just months after his difficult night against Atleti appeared to raise serious questions over his future, the Czech has gone from second choice to Tottenham’s new number one. Kinsky will now have the chance to prove that his late-season heroics were not simply a short-term response to an injury crisis, but the beginning of a new era between the sticks in north London.
