The high-profile errors he made midway through the previous campaign perhaps convinced the Spurs’ hierarchy that the Italian cannot be trusted anymore to continue as the No.1, before he underwent hernia surgery in March and lost his place to Antonin Kinsky. With Kinsky being promoted as the new No.1, Vicario’s time at Tottenham was over, and he has been desperate to return to his homeland since late May. Juventus have banked on the former Empoli man over Martinez to bring stability to their goalkeeping department. While Martinez is a World Cup winner, a lot more commanding in the box and experienced, his injury record in recent years with Villa has been patchy. The big Argentinean played this summer’s World Cup with a finger injury, turning down the advice to undergo surgery after sustaining a fractured bone in the warm-up for Villa’s Europa League final vs. SC Freiburg in May. The 33-year-old is currently sidelined, and there is no timescale for his return. This is the prime reason why Juve have opted for Vicario over Martinez.
