4 Chiefs trades that make sense before Brett Veach finalizes the roster

The 2026 offseason has been a busy one for Kansas City. The Chiefs are coming off a 6-11 season, and they spared no expense when it came to retooling the roster over the last several months. From free agency to the draft, the Chiefs aggressively pushed for long-term changes at positions of need and made it clear that they wanted to compete in 2026. Now that training camp has started, we have much more clarity on what the depth chart may look like in 2026. There have already been several stories about new additions, with Peter Woods dominating on the interior and UDFA pickup Khalil Benson being the favorite to start at right tackle. The Chiefs are clearly confident that the moves they made this offseason will help them reach their past heights, but they may not be done just yet... Despite all the changes already made, the Chiefs have remained active, and we have heard reports that they sent an offer to Stefon Diggs, who recently signed with the Commanders. Kansas City clearly knows it can always get better, and we have seen Brett Veach active in the trade market just ahead of Week 1 in years past. So what moves could be on the horizon for the Chiefs before the season starts in September? Jaylon Moore to the Commanders/Rams for a sixth round pick In the 2025 offseason, Jaylon Moore was the Chiefs' prized addition, with almost everyone thinking he was in line to be the Chiefs' starting left tackle. But after Kansas City added star left tackle Josh Simmons with its first-round pick, Moore's status with the team became a bit foggier. Now, this offseason, Moore has seemingly been struggling in a positional battle again, with Khalil Benson potentially making a run for the starting right tackle job. Now, this is not to say that Moore is a bad player—far from it. In his first year with the Chiefs, Moore saw the field in the majority of games, playing both left and right tackle throughout the year. He was a strong contributor. But this season, Moore is in the last year of his contract, and if he is not a full-time starter, it could make sense to move him. The Rams' left tackle, Alaric Jackson, may be suspended due to an offseason incident and has not been at offseason practices, and the Commanders' left tackle, Laremy Tunsil, suffered a major injury on Saturday. It is likely they are looking for a reliable option at left tackle, and they could be willing to send away a late-round pick to secure a reliable blind-side blocker for their franchise QB. Kristan Fulton to the Cowboys for a 7th round pick/pick swap The Chiefs' DB room is crowded, especially at cornerback, where the team made several major additions this offseason. In training camp, the Chiefs seem to trust two of their youngest corners, Mansoor Delane and Nohl Williams, to be their starters on the outside. Like Moore, Fulton was a big pickup for Kansas City in the 2025 offseason, but he has struggled to maintain a consistent role. Beyond Delane and Williams, the Chiefs' cornerback room also has great depth. In the slot, Kansas City has Chris Roland-Wallace, Kader Kohou, and Jadon Canady. Kansas City also brought back L'Jarius Sneed and signed Kaiir Elam this offseason, with both guys hoping to contribute to the Kansas City secondary this year. There is limited room for more depth on the roster, and Fulton could be the odd man out. With several teams needing corner depth, the Chiefs could bring in some late-round draft value. The Cowboys have been aggressive in adding corners over the last couple of years and could do so to bring in veteran help to finalize their cornerback room. Acquire Kayshon Boutte from the Patriots for a fifth round pick The Patriots overhauled their WR room this offseason, making several major additions, including AJ Brown and Romeo Doubs. During the Patriots' Super Bowl run last season, Boutte served as a full-time starter, but his role could decrease. In April, Boutte even requested a trade, and the Patriots could be willing to move on from him this offseason. This is a contract year for Boutte, so that value is likely a fifth- or sixth-round pick while the team works out a new deal. The Chiefs' wide receiver room has been wildly inconsistent, and both of the team's top receivers (Xavier Worthy and Rashee Rice) have had limited roles in training camp. Wide receiver depth is a necessity for Kansas City, and with reports that they were in on Stefon Diggs, the Chiefs' focus could shift to another 2025 Patriots pass catcher. Acquire James Houston from the Cowboys for a seventh round pick/pick swap The Chiefs made a boatload of changes along the defensive line this offseason, but they may be willing to engage in a pick swap to add some more depth at defensive end. With R. Mason Thomas having a strong first training camp and two former first-round picks also getting consistent reps, it may feel like a stretch for Kansas City to make another addition at DE. But beyond that, there is a steep fall-off, and Brett Veach may have some interest in adding another top pass rusher behind R. Mason Thomas. The Chiefs also lost Ethan Downs for the season after he suffered a torn ACL in training camp. James Houston had a great rookie year and flashed for the Cowboys in 2025 but may be on the outs for the roster in 2026. The Chiefs have several seventh-round picks they can use to make additions, and Houston could be a valuable target.
