CLEVELAND, OHIO (TheOBR.com) - Good morning, Cleveland Browns fans! THE DAILY BLOVIATION "Installation complete. Please restart your computer." I know a thing or two about installations after the first half of my career spent building and installing software applications and making them actually work. I was always reluctant to actually pull the trigger, worried excessively that there might be bugs. I'd also tend to over-prepare in the design phase, spending too much time perfecting the design before working on the code. So, sometimes my projects ran over. Todd Monken doesn't have that luxury. The Browns season starts when it starts, on schedule, and the NFL doesn't care if he's ready or not. So he has to take a hammer and get his offensive installation done, using the cranial hardware (mushware) has in hand in the form of his quarterbacks and their brains. After eight days of practice, he says it's done, and now comes time to see which fallible human being will run it behind center. Zone runs and the short passing game first, then longer-developing concepts and gap scheme runs once the pads went on. Ten different cadences by the third practice, because naturally. Now the install is done, and Monken says he'll start calling plays that cater to each quarterback's strengths, which is the football equivalent of "okay, let's see what this thing actually does." So here's where we sit on the morning of August 7. The offense is fully installed. We do not know who is playing quarterback. We are not quite sure who is playing left tackle (supposedly). We do not know who is playing right guard. Three of the five most important jobs on that side of the football are open. Rebooting is not an option. Monken has to make this work with the guys he has. WHO'S AHEAD? NOBODY, APPARENTLY: "I think to say who's ahead is a little extreme," Monken said this week, making it clear that he didn't feel he could justify evaluating quarterbacks trying to use a half-finished system. ESPN went through the state of the quarterback competition, and what comes through is two guys having wildly uneven days. Shedeur Sanders held the ball too long in an end-of-game drill and threw one out the back of the end zone as time expired, which earned him Monken's displeasure. Ten minutes later, he read a blitz, motioned a tight end in to pick it up, and dropped a touchdown on Gage Larvadain. Deshaun Watson threw six interceptions across the first couple of practices, then had his best day of camp Wednesday with multiple red zone touchdowns. They have alternated first-team reps every practice since July 29. Monken says that continues until he names somebody, and both are expected to start one of the first two preseason games. Chicago is a week from tomorrow. THE ANXIETY QUOTE: Monken has been talking a lot about pre-snap work, and recently said about Sanders: "I think you'll continue to see his operation and mechanics improve, and I think that's the biggest part right now is in and out of the huddle, getting to the line of scrimmage, eliminating that anxiety, his anxiety and my anxiety." A head coach volunteering on the record that the quarterback situation is giving him anxiety in the first week of August is either refreshingly honest or mildly terrifying. I've decided to find it refreshing. SO WHO PLAYS LEFT TACKLE: This is the one making people crazy, and I'm including myself. Dan Labbe got offensive line coach George Warhop talking about Spencer Fano versus Dawand Jones, and the answer was basically that competition is good for everybody, which is true and is also not an answer. "It's to our benefit to let those guys compete to see who's going to be the left tackle, because there's no greater way to increase a player's production than when he's in competition," Warhop said. Fine. It sounds to me like Jones is being used to motivate Fano, not that he came to Cleveland with a reputation for needing motivation. Fano is the ninth pick in the draft and spent his last two years at Utah playing the right side, so he needs first-team reps to get comfortable on the left. Jones is in a contract year, has started 24 games in three seasons with five of those at left tackle, and looked like a swing tackle at best after Berry gutted and rebuilt this line. Now he's built enough momentum to make it a genuine fight. Warhop needs both of them getting quality work, so both of them are getting quality work, and the depth chart is currently a rumor. Labbe figures Fano's draft slot wins out eventually. Probably. Nobody in Berea will say it out loud. AND RIGHT GUARD IS ACTUALLY WORSE: Teven Jenkins opened camp as the favorite there and hasn't practiced since last Friday. KT Leveston, a tackle by trade who this staff sees as a guard, has been taking the work. "I don't like guys missing time, especially when they're in a competitive situation," Warhop said, which is about as close to irritated as line coaches get in August. There's a version of this where Tytus Howard kicks inside to guard and either Jones or Fano plays right tackle. Monken allowed that they've "talked about that a little bit" before adding that they like Tytus at right tackle and like having Dawand and Austin Barber as the four tackles. Warhop was blunter: "I don't believe in moving guys around just because we have a need." Contrast that to all the times we've heard how flexible the line is. THE TRAINER'S ROOM: Zak Zinter got carted off Thursday and was headed for a concussion evaluation. Mason Graham, Mike Hall Jr., Carson Schwesinger and Jamari Thrash all remain out, and both centers, Elgton Jenkins and Parker Brailsford, are still sidelined with Brailsford wearing a brace on his right hand. That is a lot of offensive line unavailable for a team trying to settle its offensive line. THE DELPIT DEAL, FOR REAL THIS TIME: Jack Duffin waited for the actual numbers instead of running the agent's version, which is exactly why you subscribe. It's three years and $48 million with $35 million guaranteed, not the $16 million per year with $48 million guaranteed that made the rounds. Delpit's 2026 cash goes from $12 million to $17 million, a real raise. Cap space sits at $26.8 million, 13th in the league.
