Newcastle United have completed the signing of right-back Amar Dedić. He joins the club from Benfica for a fee of £29.5m.
The 23-year-old Bosnian international has signed a five-year contract with the Magpies.
The move sees him reunite with Matthias Jaissle. The pair won the Austrian Bundesliga title together at Red Bull Salzburg in 2023.
Dedić: “Matthias [Jaissle] Is a Really Big Factor for Me”
Dedić made 24 appearances in the Liga Portugal Betclic, scoring one goal and registering four assists.
He played against Newcastle in the Champions League group stage, which the Magpies won 3-0.
He has won 31 caps for Bosnia and Herzegovina, and appeared three times for them at this summer’s World Cup. Although primarily a right-back, he can play on the left too.
In his first interview on newcastleunited.com, Dedić said: “It’s a special feeling and a really big honour for me to join Newcastle United.
“Working with Matthias again was a really big factor for me. We know each other well, he knows what I can bring on the pitch and I’m really happy to be playing for him again.
“Playing Premier League football at St James’ Park is going to be really special. Every game feels like a big occasion, with an amazing atmosphere. I’m really excited to get started.”
Jaissle said: “I’m really happy to add Amar to our squad. He’s a player who I know really well, having worked with him from a young age in Austria and followed his career since.
“He will bring both defensive and attacking qualities to our squad, which suits the style of football that we want to play. He’s athletic, aggressive, and technically very good, but also has a lot of potential to develop further.
“I’m really looking forward to working with him again.”
Dedić is Jaissle’s first signing as Newcastle boss. His arrival is much-needed, as Newcastle are short of full-backs.
Tino Livramento is recovering from injury, and Kieran Trippier and Emil Krafth left the club at the end of last season.
Mason Miley played at right-back during the friendly against Bayer Leverkusen and was one of Newcastle’s best players in the 2-1 defeat. However, the 17-year-old is still a work in progress.
Newcastle want to bolster their squad further before the Premier League kicks off this weekend. They need an experienced central midfielder, another full-back, and an attacker.
