Tottenham expert fears what Folarin Balogun transfer news now means for Spurs
Folarin Balogun is not a convincing signing for Tottenham.
That is the exclusive view of Spurs expert john Wenham, who was reacting to reports that the Lilywhites have made a bid.
The United States striker impressed at the World Cup, with three goals in four games for the host nation.
The 25-year-old former Arsenal striker could be the man to solve the N17 side's forward woes.
However, Wenham believes that he is not the answer that Roberto De Zerbi should be looking for.
He thinks that would tell supporters something about the transfer business in North London.
What has been said about Folarin Balogun to Tottenham?
Wenham believes that the pursuit of Balogun, first reported by L'Equipe, would signal that they have missed out on their top two options for the position.
He does not even rate him higher than Richarlison, who was the top Premier League goalscorer last season for the relegation-threatened side.
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “I’m not overly convinced on Balogun.
“When those first reports came out from L’Equipe and the French media linking us with Balogun, the numbers in Ligue 1, which I don’t rate that highly as a division, were not that great.
“I know he’s got a couple in the Champions League as well, but it would be a bit of an underwhelming signing.
“That would be showing me that we’ve missed out on maybe the targets we had as the first and second-choice signings.
“I don’t know if I even rate Balogun above Richarlison, to be honest with you.”
What do the numbers say about Balogun?
Balogun's numbers are not very convincing. He notched 19 goals and five assists last season.
Per Fotmob data, he averaged 3.09 shots per 90 minutes, but only 1.28 of those attempts were on target.
He created just 0.96 chances for his teammates per game, and completed just 0.56 of his dribbles.
He did manage 7.18 touches in the opposition box per 90 minutes, but clearly lacked the finishing touch a lot of the time, despite his clear presence in the attacking third.
The Lilywhites need someone who is more clinical if they are to challenge for a top-four berth or something better than that.
