Manchester United enter the 2026-27 season with optimism restored after Michael Carrick guided the club to third place in the Premier League and back into the Champions League.
Carrick now begins his first full campaign as head coach, with the challenge of turning last season’s recovery into a sustained push for major honours.
The former United midfielder has made it clear that he wants his side to play with greater control, intensity and attacking purpose.

His best performances last season were built around a more settled structure and a willingness to dominate possession, but the return of European football means United must now reproduce those standards while handling a significantly busier schedule.
United’s summer recruitment has focused primarily on strengthening the centre of the pitch. Andrey Santos has arrived from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa, giving Carrick two midfielders with different but complementary qualities.
Santos offers energy, ball-winning ability and composure in possession, while Tielemans brings Premier League experience, passing range and an additional goal threat from midfield.
Karl Darlow has also joined to provide experienced goalkeeping cover, with Senne Lammens inheriting the No.1 shirt after an impressive debut campaign.
Young forward Tynan Thompson has been recruited from Tottenham as another investment in United’s future, although the teenager is not currently listed among the senior forwards on the club’s first-team page.
The core of last season’s attack remains intact. Bruno Fernandes is still the creative reference point, while Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Šeško and Amad give Carrick a varied collection of options around him.
Šeško and Mbeumo shared the club’s leading scoring honours last season with 12 goals apiece, but United will need greater consistency across the entire forward line if they are to close the gap to the title contenders.
Marcus Rashford’s future remains one of the unresolved questions heading into the season.
The England international has returned after loan spells with Aston Villa and Barcelona and has been involved during pre-season, but United’s official squad page currently displays him without a shirt number.
If Rashford stays, he would add another proven source of pace and goals; if he leaves, the club must decide whether its existing attacking depth is sufficient for four competitions.
United’s pre-season produced useful minutes for the new arrivals but ended with a reminder of the work still required.

Carrick’s side completed a varied programme that included matches against Wrexham, Paris Saint-Germain and Leeds United before losing 4-2 to AC Milan in Wroclaw. Carrick nevertheless said there were plenty of positives to take from the preparation, with Santos settling quickly and Tielemans building match fitness after his post-World Cup return.
The fixture list gives United an opportunity to establish early momentum, beginning away to newly promoted Hull City before another promoted opponent, Ipswich Town, visits Old Trafford.
A Manchester derby follows in the fourth round, providing an early measure of their progress.
Champions League qualification should now be the minimum expectation, but a credible title challenge will depend on Carrick finding his strongest midfield combination, improving United’s scoring output and successfully balancing domestic and European demands.
