The 2026 FIM Motocross World Championship returned to Uddevalla’s historic Glimminge Motorstadion on August 14-16, where a record crowd of more than 28,000 fans packed the hillsides for the MXGP of Sweden. Under sunny skies, the hard-packed circuit became slick and unforgiving as the series makes its way toward the finale. Jeffrey Herlings continued his run of dominance with another perfect weekend while Sacha Coenen made his long-awaited return to the top step of the podium.

This championship is now Herlings’ to lose. The Dutchman began Sunday’s race day by topping the warmup by nearly a second and a half over Tim Gajser, then immediately established himself at the front when the gate dropped for race one. Andrea Adamo initially claimed the Fox Holeshot Award, but Herlings and teammate Tom Vialle quickly moved around the Italian. While Pauls Jonass briefly occupied second, Herlings steadily moved ahead from the battle behind him. The championship leader controlled the race from the front and ultimately crossed the finish more than 20 seconds clear of the field.
Race two followed the same script as Herlings quickly moved through the field into the lead before a full lap had been completed. Once again, nobody could match his pace. Herlings crossed the line more than six seconds ahead of Romain Febvre to complete another 1-1 weekend and secure his 121st career Grand Prix victory. With Lucas Coenen out once again, this win pushed Herlings’ championship lead to 116 points over Febvre with only five rounds remaining.
“I feel like I am riding well, and I feel good on the bike,” Herlings said. “My whole career I struggled with starts and now they have gotten better again. In the first race, Tom and I were both fighting into the first corner, and in the second one, my jump off the gate was not the best, but I came out third, made the passes early and then had a comfortable lead. With the sun so low it felt a bit sketchy, so I did just enough. We won every session, led every lap and won both races, so I am super happy.”
Febvre’s second-place finish was another important step closer in his effort to take second in the overall championship. The reigning World Champion battled his way through the opening race, eventually moving past Adamo and Vialle to finish second. He then came out firing in race two, emerging from the opening corner with the lead. Febvre led briefly before Herlings made his move, but the Frenchman maintained second for the remainder of the race to take the runner-up spot. Another strong result helped him solidify second in the championship, sitting 116 points behind Herlings. With Lucas Coenen absent yet again, Febvre’s newfound consistency has become more valuable in this year’s battle.
Vialle returned to the MXGP podium with a strong third overall. The Frenchman has been on a steady upward trajectory in his debut 450cc season and ran up front in the opening moto before finishing third. Race two started off even better with Vialle claiming the Fox Holeshot Award and briefly leading the field. Although teammate Herlings moved through, Vialle remained in podium contention and eventually finished fourth at the line. The 3-4 scorecard was enough for third overall and Vialle’s fifth career MXGP podium. This result also pushed Vialle ahead of Maxime Renaux for seventh in the MXGP standings.
Jonass went 2-9 for fourth overall, scoring strong points after returning from an injury sustained at the MXGP of Great Britain. Gajser’s results were flip-flopped; a crash in race one relegated him to ninth, but he rebounded with a third in race two, putting the Yamaha rider fifth overall.
MX2
Sacha Coenen arrived at Uddevalla needing a breakthrough. After suffering a broken collarbone during his American vacation, the former MX2 points leader put himself back in the running with a double victory in Sweden. The Belgian dominated both motos, taking the Fox Holeshot Award in race one and immediately putting himself at the front. Liam Everts and Janis Reisulis remained close early, but Coenen continued to control the lead. Everts challenged late in the race, but Coenen still took the win. Coenen appeared to be back to full strength again in race two, as he claimed another win, adding an exclamation point to his perfect weekend. The victory marked Coenen’s eighth career Grand Prix win and sees him cut the points lead to just 24 points behind the championship leader, Guillem Farres.
Everts produced his strongest Grand Prix result of the season with a hard-fought second overall. The Belgian began race one near the front and remained in contention throughout the opening laps. He eventually settled into second behind Coenen but continued to apply pressure all the way to the finish. Race two brought more of the same, as Everts moved into second early on and spent the remainder of the race trying to close the gap to Coenen. He ultimately finished just under two and a half seconds behind his fellow countryman (and one second back in race one). The result was Everts’ first podium at Uddevalla and serves as proof of his late-season resurgence.
Camden McLellan continued his run of consistency as he claimed a fourth-consecutive podium in third overall.
Championship leader Guillem Farres delivered an impressive ride after suffering injuries in Saturday’s qualifying race. His weekend quickly became a test of endurance as he started outside the top 10 in race one but steadily rose to sixth. Race two required another comeback, with Farres again running outside the top 10. He pushed through the pain, eventually passing defending MX2 champion Simon Laengenfelder to finish fourth. A 6-4 scorecard put Farres fourth overall, salvaging the points lead but seeing it cut to 24 points over Sacha Coenen. Janis Reisulis rounded out the top five overall.CN
