CM Punk and Kevin Owens’ war of words has become one of WWE’s most personal rivalries in recent weeks, but one former WWE Champion believes Punk may have crossed the wrong line.
Speaking after the latest SmackDown, Raj Dhesi, formerly known as Jinder Mahal, questioned whether targeting Owens’ physique was the right move as their Undisputed WWE Championship clash draws closer.
The Aug. 14 edition of SmackDown featured another heated face-to-face between Punk and Owens ahead of their title match in Toronto on Aug. 21. Digging into their 20-year history dating back to Ring of Honor, Punk ended the exchange by promising to put Owens’ “fat ass to sleep.”
The promo certainly packed a punch — but Dhesi believes it may not have landed the way Punk intended.
Raj Dhesi and Bully Ray question CM Punk’s approach against Kevin Owens
Speaking on Busted Open, Dhesi praised the overall feud, saying it feels authentic because both stars appear to be taking “live shots” rather than simply following a script.
However, when the discussion turned to Punk’s comments about Owens’ appearance, Bully Ray argued that Owens’ success has already made those insults meaningless.
He pointed out that Owens has headlined WrestleMania, delivered standout promos, and consistently performed at the highest level despite never fitting the traditional WWE body type.
Dhesi agreed, believing the WWE Champion lost ground with that approach.
“Yeah, exactly. But that, to me, Punk took a bit of an L even going that direction. Yes, I understand he’s trying to take a personal jab at him. Give me something better, Punk.”
He also warned that the line between hero and villain in WWE is often blurred, adding that Punk “has to be a little bit careful.”
Bully Ray suggested Kevin Owens has another ace up his sleeve because of their lengthy history. He noted that Owens knows enough about Punk’s past to “put a couple of dents in Punk’s armor.”
Dhesi also highlighted the irony of Punk’s comments, recalling that Triple H, Kevin Nash, and others once criticized Punk himself as “skinny fat” during his rise in WWE. Bully even suggested Owens could respond by telling Punk, “You turned into one of them.”
With their first-ever singles match now set for Aug. 21, both veterans have no shortage of material to work with. Whether Punk sticks to personal insults or pivots to another strategy remains to be seen, but one thing is clear — this rivalry is no longer pulling its punches, and the gloves may already be off.
