The Brazilian’s future had been thrust into focus as Sainz emerged in reports as a potential Audi target should he elect to leave Williams. However, Bortoleto has made clear there is no vacancy on his side of the garage, revealing he is tied to Audi beyond next season as part of its long-term Formula 1 project. Speaking to the Brazilian edition of Motorsport.com, Bortoleto said his agreement does not contain provisions that could bring an early end to his time with the German manufacturer. “As far as I can say, because it’s something that’s confidential, but let’s say there are no clauses,” he said. “I have a long-term contract with Audi. I’ll be with Audi next year, and not only next year, but the following years as well. “The intention, and I’ve always said this from the beginning, is a long-term project. Mattia [Binotto] always talks about a project until 2030. So, let’s put it that way.” Bortoleto joined Sauber for his rookie F1 campaign in 2025 before remaining with the Hinwil squad as it completed its transformation into Audi’s works operation this year. The 21-year-old has scored 10 of Audi’s 12 points through the opening 11 rounds of the 2026 season and sits 14th in the drivers’ standings. Audi’s arrival as a full works team coincided with the introduction of its first in-house F1 power unit, with Bortoleto viewing the current campaign as only the beginning of a much longer development process. “It’s a project I believed in when I joined, and they believe in my potential. I’m very excited,” he said. “This year was the first step in building a new car and a new engine. Next year will be another step in putting things into practice.” Bortoleto also made clear he would be happy for Audi to retain Hulkenberg alongside him, praising the experience and qualities the German brings to the team. “I can say that my spot is filled. I won’t comment on other peoples’ contracts, but I really enjoy working with Nico,” he added. “I want to make that very clear. He’s a fast, experienced guy who brings many positive things to the team. I trust in my potential and the work we’re doing.” Sainz’s links to Audi are not new, with the four-time grand prix winner previously pursued by the German manufacturer before choosing Williams for the 2025 season. Speculation over a potential switch gathered momentum recently after Sainz said he would use the second half of the season to evaluate Williams’ progress, with the team having fallen away significantly compared to 2025. However, reports in Spanish media this week have suggested Sainz is now likely to extend his stay with Williams after Audi repeatedly closed the door on a potential move. Formula 1 returns from its traditional summer break with the Dutch Grand Prix this weekend.
