Coventry City have completed the signing of Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi from Nottingham Forest for £9m.
Awoniyi has signed for the Sky Blues following a four-season stint in the Premier League with Nottingham Forest, and will be available for Coventry's curtain raiser against reigning Premier League champions Arsenal on Friday night.
Awoniyi's Premier League career so far
Awoniyi joined the Premier League in 2022, signing for Nottingham Forest from German side Union Berlin, where he had just completed a strong season, scoring 15 goals in 31 Bundesliga matches.
Before that, the Nigerian striker had been in the Liverpool academy, and had multiple loan spells in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands before leaving Merseyside permanently.
Mixed years at the City Ground
During his time at Forest, Awoniyi had a mixed bag of seasons. In his first season with the club, Awoniyi made it to double figures for top-flight goals, scoring 10 in 27 Premier League appearances.
The following season, Awoniyi managed six goals in 20 appearances, but struggled for starts due to Chris Wood's impressive form at that time.
Towards the end of the 2024-25 season, Awoniyi suffered a ruptured intestine after colliding with a goal post in Forest's 2-2 draw with Leicester City. As a result, the striker ended up in an induced coma, but recovered quickly, and was able to return to action shortly after.
Last season, Awoniyi continued his struggles in front of goal, scoring four times in 17 league appearances, but an improvement on his single league goal the season before.
Awoniyi had also represented his country 10 times between 2021 and 2023, scoring twice.
What can Coventry fans expect from Awoniyi?
Awoniyi is a powerful striker, known for his physical presence as well as his dangerous runs into the box.
The 29-year-old has explosive pace, which combined with high-level attack positioning poses a constant threat to opposition defences.
Awoniyi can also operate as more of a target forward, holding up the ball and looking for runners out wide, which will benefit the likes of new signing Loum Tchaouna and Ephron Mason-Clark.
It seems likely that Awoniyi will be Coventry's starting striker this season, but will have plenty of competition from the likes of Haji Wright, Ellis Simms and potential new signing Sidiki Cherif.
