Bailey Peacock-Farrell admits the life of a goalkeeper can be like a game of poker sometimes as he prepares for the start of Blackpool’s EFL campaign. The 29-year-old is an experienced figure, and has had his fair share of teams since starting his career Leeds United. His CV included the likes of Burnley and Sheffield Wednesday before making the move to Bloomfield Road on loan from Birmingham City last summer. Following the mutual termination of his contract at St. Andrews in January, the Northern Ireland international penned a short-term deal with Ian Evatt’s side until the end of June, before extending his stay for a further 12 months. Ahead of Saturday’s Carabao Cup first round tie away to Grimsby Town, Peacock-Farrell has discussed the different challenges of being a goalkeeper, and how he used that to help his outfield teammates. “With the strikers, I was speaking to Dion (Charles) about when he arrives in certain situations in the box, and where he should be putting it as a right-footed player on certain angles,” he said. “Annoyingly he was using it against me a couple of days later. We have those chats, and with penalties we give our perspective. “When it comes to defending, lads can make it so much easier by taking a certain position to block shots or by shielding an area which allows you to have a guesstimate on your positioning. “It can be really simple and easier; or when everyone’s doing a bit of everything, it can make it hard. “All these things naturally find their way, but it’s about those constant reminders at the start. Click here Peacock-Farrell admits working closely with outfield players can come back to bite goalkeepers if they ever meet on opposing sides. “Penalties are the one, I’ve played against former teammates and current teammates in internationals where you end up double bluffing and all that kind of stuff,” he added. “Sometimes it’s annoying as you’ve got to second guess yourself on those things, or maybe trust the instinct of the moment. “There’s some clever players out there, and they will remember the penalties we did in training like a year or two years ago. “From when I was at certain clubs, I still have in my memory where certain players used to go if I need that in the future. “That’s all the little nuances of being in the game for a bit of time and creating friends along the way - who are now the opposition. “The hardest bit is when you’re so sure of where they’re going to go, you have to try and calm yourself down a bit and not go early or give a little sign. It’s about playing a bit of poker, and maybe pretending this way or that. “I know some goalies will go the other way and over exaggerate, (Emiliano) Martínez likes to move around his line to create a little bit of a scene which affects strikers as I think he’s got a good record. “Poker is up there in terms of trying to keep calm and straight faced for as long as we can.”
