Dan Campbell and the Detroit Lions have to perform well this season, with fans calling for it. The poor performances by the team last season, with a 9-8 record and missing the postseason have left them much disappointed.
With some key moves addressed in the offseason, the franchise are ready to perform well in the 2026 edition. However, a key loss in the preseason has left the head coach asking for a new change in the league.
Dan Campbell wants NFL to include portable sideline monitor
The Lions suffered a huge loss in their preseason opener to the Cincinnati Bengals on August 14, 2026. Aside from narrowly losing the game 14-16, cornerback Ennis Rakestraw suffered an injury. He collided with teammate Devin White in the second quarter of the game. He later had to leave the game following a tackle on Bengals running back Tahj Brooks, walking off under his own power with a stiff left arm.
After the game, X-rays revealed only a minor arm contusion. Campbell noted that he was not able to watch the first play when the player got injured, unlike the reporters and the fans. He asked the NFL for giving them a portable sideline monitor to be able to view every play.
In a statement to reporters after the game, he said, “You get a better view than I do. I don’t get to see all that stuff. I wish they’d just give us a monitor we can walk around with so we actually watch the game with you guys while we’re watching that game because you can’t see all the little things.”
Currently, the coaches rely on Microsoft Surface Sideline Viewing System tablets, which has been upgraded in 2025 with Copilot and Azure AI tools for faster play review. But they still do not provide the full television broadcast angles available to media and viewers. Campbell also spoke about another new rule.
Dan Campbell wants to keep using red challenge flag
The NFL has rolled out a new 2026 rule allowing an assistant to throw the challenge flag instead of the head coach. However, Campbell has rejected that rule. He said, “I’m not giving that flag up to anybody. No way.”
He added, “The buck stops with me anyway. I’m answering the questions, so why I would give it to somebody else for me to answer for somebody else? It all comes to me anyway. That’s it.” According to Pro Football Reference, Campbell has managed to overturn 13 out of 27 challenges in the NFL so far.
It remains to be seen whether Dan Campbell’s wishes will be fulfilled by the NFL.
