The New York Jets were back on the field Monday morning in Florham Park for a light practice that ran from approximately 8:30 to 10:10. The media was on the field today, giving us a good look at individual work, special teams and team periods. The biggest news was the return of T’Vondre Sweat and Joseph Ossai, while Kenyon Sadiq was dressed and appears to be getting closer to a return. Here is a recap of what we saw during Monday’s Jets Camp practice.
General Notes
- Practice started at approximately 8:30 and wrapped up around 10:10. Overall, it was a lighter practice.
- T’Vondre Sweat was back on the field and participated in practice. Aaron Glenn said afterward that the Jets actually had to slow Sweat down because he didn’t want to come out.
- Joseph Ossai also returned to practice and participated in team periods.
- Kenyon Sadiq was dressed and with the team. He appears to be getting close to returning.
- Garrett Wilson did not practice. Glenn said Wilson arrived at the facility and threw up, so the Jets held him out.
- Demario Davis and Minkah Fitzpatrick had veteran rest days.
- Mory Bamba and D’Angelo Ponds were both out.
- The offense and defense spent time working separately before moving into team periods.
Special Teams
- The punt team received plenty of work early in practice.
- Special teams coordinator Chris Banjo was very vocal and brought plenty of energy to the period while Aaron Glenn stood back and watched.
- Jaden Keller caught Glenn’s attention during the punt-team work, with the head coach offering praise for his performance.
- With NY Jets roster decisions getting closer, these special teams reps become increasingly important for players competing for the final spots.
Defense
- Sweat participated in positional drills before getting work during 11-on-11 periods.
- Ossai showed good backside pursuit on a running play, getting across the formation and helping shut it down.
- Marcelino McCrary-Ball generated pressure on Geno Smith during team work, helping force an incompletion.
- The return of Sweat and Ossai was the biggest development on defense. Getting both players back into team periods gives Aaron Glenn more options as the Jets move deeper into the preseason.
Offense
- Geno Smith looked good moving around during the early portion of practice and was sharp during passing drills.
- With this being a lighter practice, there wasn’t much reason to make too much out of either the good or bad from the starting offense.
- Cade Klubnik had an incompletion earlier in team work after rolling out of the pocket.
- Klubnik finished practice on a much better note during the red-zone period.
Field Goals
- Jason Sanders: 7 of 8, with his only miss coming from 53 yards.
- Cade York: 5 of 8, missing from 50, 53 and 55 yards, with his attempt from 53 hitting the upright.
Red Zone
Cade Klubnik had one of the better offensive sequences of the day when the Jets moved into red-zone work. Klubnik drove the offense down the field and finished the possession with a touchdown.
This was after Geno had less success, he was picked off by Andre Cisco when the first team was on the field.
For Klubnik it was a good finish to the day for the rookie quarterback after some uneven moments earlier in practice.
Standouts
- T’Vondre Sweat
- Joseph Ossai
- Cade Klubnik
- Jaden Keller on special teams
Final Thoughts
This wasn’t a practice where we need to force a long list of winners and losers. It was a shorter, lighter session, and the biggest developments involved players returning to the field. T’Vondre Sweat and Joseph Ossai were both back practicing, while Kenyon Sadiq appears to be getting closer. Glenn’s comment that the Jets had to slow Sweat down because he didn’t want to come out was particularly encouraging.
Garrett Wilson’s absence was illness-related, while Demario Davis and Minkah Fitzpatrick received veteran rest days.
Cade Klubnik provided the offensive highlight by finishing a red-zone drive with a touchdown, and special teams received plenty of attention as the competition for the final roster spots continues.
