Cardinal Otunga are new FEASSA rugby 7s champions

Cardinal Otunga High School, Mosocho, are the Federation of East Africa Schools Sports Association (FEASSA) rugby 7s champions after completing an unbeaten campaign at the 23rd edition of the Games in Morogoro, Tanzania.
Backed by Chief Principal Ezekiel Okeyo, the Nyanza region champions secured the title with two victories on Monday at Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA).
Coached by Edwin Metobo, Cardinal Otunga beat Uganda champions Makerere College 27-7 before completing their three-day round-robin campaign with a 41-0 thrashing of Uganda’s Busiga College.
They had opened their title bid with a hard-fought 12-0 victory over Friends School Bokoli before beating Tanzania’s Elerai 31-5.
On Saturday, Cardinal Otunga produced two impressive comebacks, beating national champions Butula Boys 17-14 and Mbarara High of Uganda 17-15.
The second- and third-placed teams will be determined on Tuesday when national champions Butula Boys Senior School face arch-rivals Friends School Bokoli.
Elsewhere, Kinale Girls completed a double after winning the inaugural girls’ 15s title. Kinale had earlier won the girls’ 7s crown.
Kinale walloped Tanzania’s Murongoine 62-0 on Monday to claim the title. They had earlier beaten compatriots St Joseph’s Girls Kitale 29-0 in the three-team competition.
In volleyball, national champions Kesogon Mixed, Soweto Academy, St Martha’s Mwitoti and ACK Chepsaita recorded impressive victories.
Kesogon beat Mengele 3-0 (25-11, 25-9, 25-16) to register their second Group A win.
Mwitoti saw off Uganda’s Bukedea Comprehensive School 3-2 (25-22, 25-20, 21-25, 18-25, 15-13) to secure their second win.
They rallied from two sets down after the Ugandans had earlier beaten fellow Ugandans Soweto. Kesogon and Mwitoti now need one more win each to secure semi-final places.
Soweto beat Tanzania’s Mwanhuzi Secondary School 3-0 (25-22, 25-12, 25-22) to register their first win of the competition.
In the boys’ category, debutants ACK Chepsaita enhanced their semi-final hopes after beating Burundi’s Ecole Technique Etincelante 3-1 (22-25, 27-25, 25-16, 29-27).
In netball, national champions Andersen Mixed beat Tanzania’s Mbeya 55-32 for their second win, while St Monica Bukokholo defeated Uganda’s Light College Katikamu 49-41 in a closely contested match.
