The Echo revealed on Tuesday that the Black Cats are interested in bringing the international attacker to the Stadium of Light, with talks already taking place over a possible move. Portuguese outlet A Bola has since reported that Sunderland made exploratory contact to establish the conditions required to sign Catamo, who has been on the club’s radar for several months. According to continental publication Record, however, Sporting have flatly rejected an offer from the Wearsiders, with the report going on to state that active negotiations are no longer taking place. It is understood that Catamo is considered to be an important part of Sporting’s plans for the coming season, with the Portuguese champions unwilling to let any more of their key players leave between now and the end of the transfer window unless their release clauses are met. Catamo’s clause stands at €60million, approximately £51million. But in a fresh interview with Radio Antena 1, Conde has urged Sporting to consider selling his compatriot, suggesting that the player could grow increasingly frustrated if he is not allowed to take the next step in his career elsewhere. The Mozambique boss said: “He [Catamo] sees many of his colleagues moving to other leagues with financial advantages. A footballer's career doesn't last forever, and he also wants to seize this moment. I imagine he’s going through a period of anxiety. “Geny has already given so much, so much to Sporting, and I think this is the ideal moment to take the next step. As a national team coach, I would also be pleased, because I would find an even more motivated player, and the national team would benefit sportingly from that change.” Catamo, 25, signed for Sporting in 2019, and has since made 137 senior appearances for the club.
