NY Giants roster moves: QB Jake Haener signed, RB Najee Harris visiting
The Giants add a quarterback, and might be on the verge of adding a veteran running back.
Haener came into the NFL as a fourth-round pick by the New Orleans Saints out of Fresno State in the 2023 NFL Draft. He did not play in the 2023 season and was only active for eight games in 2024 with one start. Giants fans may remember Haener coming onto the field in 2024 after Derek Carr was injured in the Giants’ 14-11 loss to the Saints. He largely spent the 2025 season on the Saints practice squad, and signed a reserve/future contract with the Kansas City Chiefs in 20226. He was waived by the Chiefs back in May to make room for undrafted free agent signings.
Haener will take the roster spot vacated by the sudden retirement of Sam Webb on Sunday, and gives the Giants another option at quarterback after Brandon Allen’s poor performance against the Minnesota Vikings.
The Giants’ interest in Harris comes in the wake of a groin/abdomen injury suffered by running back Dante Miller.
Harris is a familiar face for John Harbaugh, as he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers out of Alabama in the first round (24th overall) of the 2021 NFL Draft. He spent the next four years with the Steelers and ran for at least 1,000 yards in each of his first four seasons. Harris is also a familiar face for senior offensive assistant Greg Roman, who coached him last year when Harris signed with the Los Angeles Chargers in free agency. Unfortunately, that pairing was cut short when Harris tore his Achilles tendon in Week 3 against the Denver Broncos.
Harris is a big, physical runner at 6-foot-1, and roughly 235 pounds, bringing some of the size and power that Harbaugh enjoyed at Baltimore with Derrick Henry. He isn’t a big-play threat, but does have solid hands as a receiver and is a reliable runner between the tackles. Harris was also very durable player prior to tearing his Achilles, starting every game as for his four years as a Steeler and carrying the ball 1,097 times in his 68 starts.
As of this writing, it remains to be seen whether the Giants will sign Harris. Stay with Big Blue View while we keep an eye on the situation.
