The West Virginia Mountaineers saw several players depart in the portal this past offseason. And at the time, fans of the program probably felt like one of the most talented departures was wide receiver Cam Vaughn. Vaughn was the team's leading receiver last season, hauling in 35 receptions for 451 yards and four touchdowns. He was a redshirt sophomore, and finished the season with two years of eligibility left. So when the news broke he was entering the portal, it came as a tough blow for many fans. But there was some buzz at the time that the Mountaineers may have been fine with Vaughn leaving, opening up some questions about how the coaching staff might feel about Vaughn and why they'd let such a talented player that followed Rodriguez from Jacksonville State get away. Now, we not only have an answer to the question, but one that proves that Rodriguez and his staff made the right decision. Cam Vaughn arrested, cut from team at Miami (FL) after leaving WVU football Last week, Vaughn was reportedly arrested, with a mugshot emerging online amid rumors that he was no longer with his new team, the Miami (FL) Hurricanes. And on Monday morning, Miami coach Mario Cristobal officially disclosed that Vaughn was dismissed from the team. He also said that he "wish[es] him the best," but did not give an official reason for why Vaughn was cut. After footage of Vaughn emerged in the final game of the season jogging out of frame instead of pursuing a defender who intercepted an underthrown pass that targeted him, there were questions from the West Virginia fans about how bought in Vaughn was. Now, it's becoming a bit more clear that play was a symptom of a larger issue with Vaughn, and a big enough issue that Rodriguez did not hesitate to let Vaughn hit the door this offseason. And these latest updates on Vaughn just goes to show that the Mountaineers made the right choice in parting ways with the young wide receiver, if the decision was indeed mutual as has been rumored – and it's not hard to imagine that being at least a little bit true, given the fact he's already gone from his new team. Imagine if West Virginia was dealing with these issues now? It would definitely pose a risk at bringing down the morale in the locker room, and would serve as a major distraction for the Mountaineers as they in the middle of fall camp and gearing up for the first game of the year. And with hype rising around several of the receivers WVU added this offseason, it's not likely there was a serious downgrade due to Vaughn's departure. So after spending the offseason wondering if the right move was made by the program in allowing Vaughn to leave, West Virginia fans can now rest easy knowing that they're in a much better situation today without him than they likely would be with him.
