Does Newcastle United spending £180m+ and with more to come mean no ambition?
Newcastle United are set to take their summer spending beyond the £180m mark.
Amar Dedic is now on Tyneside and after his medical and final formalities are completed (and the usual Newcastle United extensive media stuff with a new signing is prepared…), he will be officially announced.
The Benfica right-back will become Newcastle United’s sixth summer signing.
The club will be saying the usual ‘undisclosed fee’ but it had been widely reported that United have agreed a £29.5m deal with Benfica.
Goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen was first to arrive this summer, the 20-year-old arriving from Stade de Reims in a reported £24.6m deal.
Then 20-year-old winger Bazoumana Toure came in for £43m from Hoffenheim.
Sean Steur next, £23m invested in the 18-year-old midfielder.
Then 20-year-old midfielder Aladji Bamba signed from Monaco in a £35.5m deal.
Before a £25.7m contract release clause was triggered for Lukas Hornicek.
Now Amar Dedic set to be reunited with his former RB Salzburg boss Matthias Jaissle in a £29.5m deal.
Adding those up, it will be a summer 2026 spend of around £180.5m by Newcastle United.
With more to come.
At least one experienced midfielder I think we can comfortably assume will be signed by 11pm on Tuesday 1 September 2026. Plus at least one or two other signings potentially.
Reportedly one or two more might still leave as well. A year left on his NUFC contract sees Joe Willock seemingly set to leave, whilst there had been claims of Jacob Murphy leaving, plus potentially Joelinton wanting to go to the Saudi Arabia Pro League.
With this Newcastle United transfer window, nothing would surprise me!
These are strange times and I think for sure Newcastle United will end up with a summer 2026 transfer spend that is easily in excess of £200m.
Yet at the same time the mood of the NUFC fanbase is anything but positive!
As I said, strange times.
The fact is of course that far more than £200m has already been generated by the sales of Tonali, Bruno and Gordon, with promising young players the only replacements so far.
A delicate balance as the UEFA SCR restrictions have ensured Newcastle United have to seriously rein back on any net transfer spend AND reduce the wage bill.
Maybe revisit this again at 11pm on Tuesday 1 September when the transfer window has closed and we know all of the ins and outs.
