Ex-Sunderland favourite completes Championship transfer after period as free agent Ross Stewart has completed a free transfer to Swansea City. Former Sunderland striker Ross Stewart has completed a move to Welsh outfit Swansea City following a period as a free agent, it has been confirmed. The Scotland international, who travelled to the World Cup as part of Scotland’s squad earlier this summer, left Southampton in June after failing to agree terms on a contract extension at St. Mary’s. The Saints were embroiled in a spying scandal last season that ultimately led to their expulsion from the Championship play-off final, costing Stewart and his teammates an opportunity at winning promotion to the Premier League. Since his departure, Stewart has been without a club, but was unveiled a Swansea player on Thursday. The 30-year-old has put pen to paper on a three-year deal. Speaking about the decision to sign Stewart, Jacks head coach Vitor Matos said: “Ross is an experienced and proven performer in the Championship, and we are delighted to have him as part of what we are trying to build here at Swansea City. “In our conversations he has made clear his hunger and desire to be an important senior figure and leader in our dressing room. He brings a wealth of experience on and off the pitch. His performances last season in the Championship were a standout, and it earned him a deserved place in Scotland’s World Cup squad. We are very excited to see Ross in a Swansea shirt.” Stewart enjoyed a highly successful spell with Sunderland between 2021 and 2023, scoring 40 goals in 80 outings - including a vital strike at Wembley in the 2022 League One play-off final. He signed for Southampton for a fee of around £10 million, but endured an injury-ravaged stint on the south coast, and was limited to just 50 appearances across three seasons. During that time he scored a dozen goals, with 11 of those coming across 33 outings last term.
