All three Gwent Super Rygbi Cymru sides were in action on the weekend as they prepare for the start of the season. Pontypool hosted fellow Gwent side Newbridge, while Ebbw Vale travelled down the A467 to face Cross Keys and Newport headed to Guernsey. All three sides ended up with wins, Pontypool scoring nine tries (55-15), Ebbw Vale five (14-33) and Newport six (19-42) as they set themselves up for the SRC opening weekend on the 12th of September. Dragons Academy players Jake Sheppard and Carter Pritchard were both on the scoresheet for Pooler in a game where both Scott Crewe and Dan Bassett started in the pack. Also on the scoresheet were Ellis Lewis, Ewan Rosser, Connor Edwards, Lewis Appleby, Liam Antrobus and a brace for Evan Lloyd. Lloyd also kicked three conversions for a 16-point haul in his first Pontypool appearance. Regan Jones, Codi Purnell, Elliot Beavan and Ryley Fussell were all in action for Ebbw Vale as they took on Crosskeys with both communities having recently been affected by the fires in Gwent. The Steelmen ended up the victors in the Mark Prangell Memorial Cup in a competitive match. Newport’s side included Theo McKerrow, Tiehi Chatham, Cerrig Smith, Monty Jones and Will Ford, with the fly-half adding a conversion. The Black and Ambers’ tries came through a Chay Foster-Smith brace, Tom Hoppe, Dafydd Buckland, Carwyn Penny and Wade Langley. Next up for Newport is a trip to Beddau on Saturday with Ebbw also travelling to Dings Crusaders, while Pontypool host Cinderford.
