West Ham drew 2-2 with Burnley at Turf Moor on the opening weekend of the 26/27 Championship season.
The Hammers got off to a bit of a shaky start, but that was put to bed by a Max Kilman header from a Jarod Bowen corner after ten minutes. Nuno’s side then took control until the Clarets but on a but of pressure before half-time.
The clarets could have levelled it up or even taken the lead, but it was Manor Solomon that grabbed the crucial next goal which gave Irons fans real belief of getting three points. However, the crumble eventually came.
Ollie Scarles’ reckless challenge in the penalty box allowed Flemming to get one back for the hosts, then after that it was inevitable that we weren’t going to win. In fact, we were lucky not to lose.
This is exactly the same as what we became used to last season and was inevitably the reason we ended up getting relegated. Yes we were worse under Potter and improved significantly under Nuno. But the number of times the Portuguese manager got us playing well, got us a goal or two up then decided to sit back, bring on more defensive players to try and hold on to the lead. Before ending up throwing the lead away was why we got relegated on the final day, and it’s happened again.
But it’s not all Nuno’s fault, the lack of fight and determination from the players to hold onto the lead with the pressure mounting was poor. Kilman being too relaxed like normal, Mavropanos being afraid to stand up and show how good he is, Taty running straight down the tunnel after the fans sung his name for 90 minutes, Diouf’s laziness costing us in both defence and attack.
Even though we cleared that corner right at the end, you just knew it was going to come back, and before you knew it Zian Flemming was wheeling away in celebration breaking the travelling Cockneys’ hearts.
The performance as a whole from Nuno and the player’s wasn’t good enough, but that last ten or so minutes after the penalty were embarrassing, the fact we got out of Turf Moor with a point was amazing, and that’s not what we wanted to be saying coming int this game, even at half time.
Yesterday was a really poor start from the Hammers, we need to really step it up against Charlton in Stratford on Saturday, or the pressure could mount on Nuno and the players fast,
