COVENTRY City ended their pre-season preparations with an impressive 2-0 home win against Ligue 1 side Monaco. First-half goals from Ellis Simms and Loum Tchaouna mean the Sky Blues head into their first Premier League campaign for 25 years off the back of a victory. Coventry boss Frank Lampard handed starts to summer signings Aurele Amenda, Frank Onyeka, Tchaouna and Caleb Yirenkyi which Gustavo Hamer featured as a second-half substitute. Monaco’s side featured former England and Tottenham Hotspur defender Eric Dier while Switzerland international Denis Zakaria, once of Juventus and Chelsea, captained the visitors. Coventry went close early on when Simms rolled the ball into the path of new arrival Yirenkyi only for a strong hand from Lukas Hradecky to deny the midfielder the opening goal. The visitors responded with a chance of their own as Mika Biereth saw his effort towards the right corner of the goal trickle narrowly wide. However, the home side took the lead on 12 minutes when Matt Grimes threaded a ball through to Simms who coolly found the bottom right corner past Hradecky. And Coventry doubled their lead on 32 minutes as Yirenkyi played in Tchaouna who rifled a shot into the bottom left corner from inside the box. Lampard introduced the returning Hamer from the bench on 64 minutes as the Brazilian received a hero’s welcome at the Coventry Building Society Arena. The Sky Blues then thought they had scored a third goal late on only for Amenda to see his towering header ruled out for offside from Grimes’ free-kick. Coventry begin the Premier League with a trip to champions Arsenal on Friday, August 21 with kick-off at 8pm at the Emirates Stadium.
