West Ham midfielder Edson Alvarez is set for a return to familiar surroundings after reports suggested he has decided to spend the 2026/27 campaign in England.
The 28-year-old spent last season on loan with Turkish side Fenerbahçe, where he rebuilt his reputation with a series of solid displays in both domestic and European competition.
Yet despite being expected to make a permanent departure from West Ham this summer, links to clubs such as (former club) Ajax and Real Sociedad have failed to bear fruit thus far - leaving Alvarez facing the prospect of representing the Hammers in the Championship.
And according to Mexican journalist @Kery!, it is not an option that Alvarez would be particularly averse to. "Edson has agreed to stay this season with West Ham in order to seek promotion to the Premier League," he wrote, adding that "Edson has chosen his team and will wear the number 4 shirt."
Ajax, with whom Alvarez enjoyed four successful seasons - including one season alongside new Hammer Joel Veltman (see above) - renewed their interest in the Mexico international earlier in the summer, while Real Sociedad were also linked with a potential move for the player during the current transfer window.
Yet despite West Ham's relegation from the Premier League at the end of last season and with the club looking to revamp the squad and reduce costs ahead of life in the Championship, a permanent departure for Alvarez now appears increasingly unlikely. * Something to say about this story?
