Celtic are showing interest in Lazio winger Matteo Cancellieri as they look to add some quality to the flanks this summer. The Hoops remain in talks over a deal for Hassan, but with negotiations still ongoing, the club appear to be exploring other options should a move for the Real Oviedo attacker fail to materialise. Cancellieri is one of the names under consideration. The 24-year-old has also been linked with West Ham in recent weeks and is entering the final year of his contract with Lazio, a situation that could present an opportunity for interested clubs. Lazio’s financial position may also work in Celtic’s favour. The Serie A side are understood to be under pressure to raise funds before making further additions to their squad, meaning player sales could become a necessity before the transfer window closes. Cancellieri has already amassed more than 100 Serie A appearances, gaining valuable experience through loan spells away from Lazio as well as with the Rome club. However, there is one obvious obstacle to any potential deal. According to LazioChannel, Celtic’s interest is genuine and currently represents the “most logical move” for the Italian winger. The same report, though, claims Lazio value the attacker at €15 million – just under £13 million. That would make Cancellieri more expensive than Kasper Høgh, whose move to Celtic is worth £11 million plus add-ons, and would represent another club-record outlay if Lazio held firm on their valuation. As a result, any deal would almost certainly require significant negotiation. Whether that comes through a reduced transfer fee, add-ons or another structure remains to be seen, but it is difficult to imagine Celtic meeting Lazio’s reported asking price outright. However, his contract situation, Lazio’s need to generate funds and Celtic’s concrete interest mean he is certainly a name worth keeping an eye on as the transfer window develops.
