Celtic’s pursuit of World Cup star Haissem Hassan has taken another turn after the winger was left out of Real Oviedo’s travelling squad for their latest pre-season fixture. The Hoops are still looking to add a third signing of the summer following the arrivals of Camilo Duran and Kasper Hogh. While both strengthen Martin O’Neill’s options through the middle, there is still work to be done before the transfer window closes. Left-back remains a priority with Kieran Tierney currently the club’s only senior option. Greg Taylor has also been linked with a return after reports suggested new PAOK boss Alessio Lisci does not see him as part of his plans. A winger is another area Celtic are actively trying to strengthen. Talks with Egyptian international Haissem Hassan are ongoing, although no agreement has been reached at the time of writing. Hassan enhanced his reputation with Egypt at the World Cup and, where his direct running and willingness to take defenders on caught plenty of attention despite modest attacking returns. The winger reported back for pre-season training with Oviedo, but the latest development has inevitably fuelled further speculation. Oviedo travel to Germany to face Nürnberg on Friday as part of their summer preparations. When the club confirmed the travelling party, Hassan’s name was missing from the squad list. Journalist Pablo Fernández has since reported on social media that Hassan will remain in Oviedo to follow an individual training programme while uncertainty over his future continues. Celtic are not the only club reported to be interested. French side Lens, who finished runners-up in Ligue 1 last season, are also reported to be monitoring the situation. Hassan’s release clause fell from £16 million to £10 million following Oviedo’s relegation from La Liga this summer. Whether the Spanish club ultimately insist on the full amount remains to be seen, but Fernandez’s recent comments suggest they are under no pressure to sell and will not allow one of their prized assets to leave for a cut-price fee. The numbers from last season do not immediately jump off the page. Hassan finished the league campaign without a goal and registered three assists in 38 appearances. His underlying performances tell a different story. His pace, willingness to drive at defenders and ability to carry the ball into dangerous areas have made him an attractive option for clubs looking to add width and creativity. For Celtic, that profile fits what is currently missing. With Hogh and Duran now in the door, adding natural wide players capable of supplying quality service has become even more important. Hassan remains firmly on the radar, and his omission from Oviedo’s latest trip abroad is another development worth watching as Celtic continue their search for more attacking reinforcements.
